Mark Schlabach picks Nebraska

Gene Wojeoifjoejofeski picks Wisconsin

15. The picks

Missed on Mississippi State over Ole Miss, Texas over TCU, Arizona over Arizona State and Florida State over Florida (when will I remember that FSU plays in the ACC?). But nailed some of the coin flip-ish games (Ohio State over Michigan, Oklahoma over Oklahoma State, Stanford over UCLA, etc.). This week's picks:

Rutgers over Louisville, Northern Illinois over Kent State, Stanford over UCLA, Oklahoma over TCU, Boise State over Nevada, Cincinnati over UConn, Kansas State over Texas, FSU over Georgia Tech, Wisconsin over Nebraska, Pittsburgh over South Florida, West Virginia over Kansas.

Pick Six Previews has us winning, great write-up. These guys are 1st in Stassen Accuracy so far

Back in August I predicted this would be the title game, but since I was more sure of Wisconsin’s ‘Ineligible Division’ title, I predicted them to win the conference. Now that my matchup has in fact come to fruition, I am forced to re-evaluate. Wisconsin (7-5) limps into the title game having lost the past two games in overtime, while this resilient Nebraska team surges, having executed FOUR double-digit 2nd half comebacks!

Wow, just watched it, and Mark Schlabach gave absolutely nothing to validate his pick. Probably just looked at the records and that's it.

Like Big Red Wrap-up mentioned, this is a scary game for Nebraska with Baker out and Montee Ball finding his form again...

No. 12 Nebraska versus Wisconsin

Adam Rittenberg: Nebraska is three games better than Wisconsin in the win column, but the teams are fairly evenly matched, as we saw Sept. 29 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Wisconsin has been in every game this season and, with a few bounces here and there, could have the same record as Nebraska. The championship game ultimately will be a microcosm of both teams' seasons. Nebraska starts sloppily and commits two first-quarter turnovers, one of which Wisconsin converts into a Montee Ball touchdown run. The Badgers attack the middle of Nebraska's defensive line effectively in the first half and lead 14-10 at halftime. But Nebraska makes the right personnel adjustments and turns in a big third quarter behind Rex Burkhead (120 rush yards, 2 TDs). Wisconsin's defense stabilizes in the fourth, and Curt Phillips leads a late scoring drive to tie things up and send it to overtime. In the extra session, Nebraska's defense holds Wisconsin to three points, setting up a game-winning touchdown run by Taylor Martinez. Nebraska 27, Wisconsin 24 (OT)

Brian Bennett: Overtime, eh? I see you're predicting a long night for us at Lucas Oil Stadium. Wisconsin wouldn't want to see an extra period, since the Badgers are 0-3 in overtime games this season. Every Badgers game is close, but I don't see a lot of ways that they can upset Nebraska, which has gotten a lot better on defense since Sept. 29. The Huskers fell behind big early in that one primarily because of turnovers, which are always a concern for Bo Pelini's team. I don't think Nebraska will be as sloppy with the ball in this one, but I could see the Huskers coming out a little tight as the favorites with more to lose. A Ball touchdown run puts the Badgers up early as Wisconsin pounds the ball at a defensive line missing Baker Steinkuhler. Ultimately, though, Nebraska's speed and depth wear down a very good Wisconsin defense on the turf with its endless array of sweeps and quick-hit passes. Martinez throws for two touchdowns and runs for another, and Burkhead breaks off a long scoring run against a tiring Badgers D in the second half. Curt Phillips and the Wisconsin passing game struggle against what has become one of the nation's best pass defenses, and Ciante Evans shows All-Big Ten voters what they missed with a key interception. Nebraska pulls away late and celebrates with roses. Nebraska 28, Wisconsin 20

Final regular-season records

Adam Rittenberg: 76-20 (.792)

Brian Bennett: 71-25 (.740)

PHIL STEELE

Since NU joined the Big Ten last year these teams have met twice with the home team 2-0. They met in the Big Ten opener on Sept 29th with the Huskers rallying from a 17 point deficit to win 30-27 with 24-17 FD and 440-295 yard edges. NU trailed 27-10 in the 3Q but scored 20 points on 4 straight poss while holding the Badgers in check (Game Recap). RB Ball lost his first career fumble at the UW49 which ended the Badgers final possession. Due to OSU and PSU’s post season bans UW clinched the spot in this game on Nov 10th with their huge 62-14 win over Indiana. Since then the Badgers are 0-2 losing to both the Bucks and Lions. UW tied both of those games in the final :20 of regulation on a td pass only to lose it in OT. QB Phillips (129 ypg, 53%, 4-1) has been steady with the job description basically to avoid TO’s and hand the ball off to the FBS’s new career td leader Ball (1593, 5.0).

UW’s top tackler LB Borland (hamstring) has missed the last 2 but is expected to return here to help a solid run D (111, 3.4) vs the Big Ten’s top offense. The Huskers clinched their spot in Indy with a 13-7 Black Friday win over Iowa. On a chilly day with wind gusts up to 40 mph NU trailed 7-3 at the break and didn’t take the lead until late 3Q thanks to the return of RB Burkhead (69, 4.3) who teamed with Martinez to give the Hawks a 200-108 rush yard edge. Big Ten pass eff leader Martinez (207, 63%, 21-8, 833 rush) has led five 2H comeback wins this year with his top target being big play threat Bell (789, 17.9). NU allows 166 rush ypg (4.2). Even though the Huskers clinched their spot in this game 2 weeks after the Badgers expect more NU fans to pack Indy as this has been considered a down season for Wisconsin after back-to-back Big Ten Titles while the Huskers have a chance to win their first league title since ‘99.

PHIL’S FORECAST: WISCONSIN 27 NEBRASKA 24
