ADS
The Phillips thing was tricky, because he isn't exactly what we look for in our DE's. Papuchis likes the basketball player types. Tall and very athletic, just look at the DE's we've recruited to past couple of cycles. Harrison picked a defensive scheme in Stanford that suits him very well. Quote Link to comment
Mavric
While I agree fully on the DE's we have being better than Ott, it wasnt really about playing time or performance. I dont even care if he rides the bench for 5 years. I'm sorry if it would be a wasted scholly to the blind eye, but I'm speaking more to the intangible connection with the high school kids of this state. Ott was a Nebraska kid. He should be playing for Nebraska. Unfortunately, I just don't think this is possible in this day and age. You really have to go with they guys who you are expecting to be starters. There just aren't enough scholarships to go around. We'll probably only have three scholarship QBs on the roster next year. Probably only four RBs - maybe 3. We only have 6 DEs lined up right now and 7 CBs. To go three deep at each of 22 spots is 66 guys plus specialists. That's already about 70 of your 85 spots who are an injury away from being in the two-deep. And there's really closer to 26 or so spots to fill by the time you factor in different personnel groupings. And that's assuming everyone pans out. I think you have to be as picky as you can. And that means a lot of Nebraska kids who would have gotten a scholarship back in the day won't anymore. Quote Link to comment
HUSKER FREAK
I definitely agree with what you are saying. There has been a few in the last couple of years that I think should have gotten an offer Quote Link to comment

dylan
KC - Sterup showed that he was good enough to start this year as a sophomore. He just happened to have three seniors ahead of him (which is a good thing). Jake Cotton would have started as a sophomore if not for injury. A-Rod played well enough as a junior at RT. Sam Cotton struggled with injury, but played significant minutes, and did pretty well, as a freshman. Banderas played as a freshman. Davie was looking good by all accounts and should be able to recover from the knee. Even among the walk-ons, the long brothers, burtch, and janovich all made an impact as under-classmen. There are obviously some nebraska kids that get scholarships that don't pan out, and there's some that take a while to develop, particularly at a position like OL that naturally favors upper classmen. However, I don't see any reason to think it's endemic to nebraska kids or at a greater rate than out of state kids. It's a hard decision to make on offering local kids, and I think our staff has done pretty well in this area. You're never going to be perfect in predicting which will pan out. And, yes, I find it amusing that after all the belly-aching about the cottons they turned out to be good players worth every bit of their scholarships. Quote Link to comment
Thanks_Tom RR
With Ameer staying, can we put this confusing thread to bed? Quote Link to comment

Count 'Bility
Sterup's gonna lockdown one of the tackle spots starting next season. The guy will be in the NFL. His high school coach has been saying that since he was a freshman. And his high school coach has been around the block more than a few times. Frankly, I thought the same thing when I saw him play. Get 60 pounds on him-which he did-and he'll be a mainstay on the edge. Quote Link to comment

Agree that he should be a cornerstone the next two years. Quote Link to comment

Yeah but when Bo Pelini and staff only have so many recruiting points to spend each week it's easier to take advantage of the guys close by (costs less points). Now maybe in the future Bo will invest some of his experience points into gaining more recruiting points each week but until then he has to save points for the big push in the offseason.... 1 Quote Link to comment
