Gay marriage legal in all 50 states

I can help but wonder if homosexuality is the sin many Christians hate so much because it's the one they're not actually committing.

It's easy to beat the drum and wrangle out some dollars from people hating on gays. It's not easy to do so hating on shrimp, bacon, mixing meat and dairy, mixing fabrics, or mixing crops on the same plot of land.

People also need to understand the context on the levitical laws and that they have no bearing on life today.

Out of all of the low hanging fruit that you could choose as far as actual sins that Christians do commit, greed, gluttony, adultery, etc. you choose to go after non-sinful nonsensical examples. Why?

The things he listed are in the same area of the bible as the not being gay stuff. So he was obviously listing them to show how ridiculous it is to get in an uproar over people being gay. It's as stupid as it would be to make a big deal out of people doing the things he listed. They're things we should not be taking literally now.

My personal favorite is that according to the bible it's an abomination to wear clothes of the other gender. So, basically, any woman who wears pants is committing an abominable sin. A sin just as bad as having sex with another woman. Any bible-thumping woman who wears pants has no right to call out gay people.

Do your research - there's a handful of places all over the Bible that have mention of homosexuality, some in the OT and some in the NT. Targeting Leviticus specifically undermines any point to be made when there are such better points that can be made.

Here is why homosexuality is different from other sins out there, and why it gets targeted so much more than any other by Christians.

Homosexuality, in our country, is celebrated. Murder is not, theft is not, adultery is not. etc... I stumbled upon a great explanation of this last night.

It’s not the only sin mentioned, but it is different from all the rest, at least right now. At this moment in history, contrary to the other sins listed here, homosexuality is celebrated by our larger society with pioneering excitement. It’s seen as a good thing, as the new hallmark of progress.

To be sure, the masses increasingly make no bones about sin in general. Innumerable people are idolaters, not to mention those who are sexually immoral, or who commit adultery, or who steal and are greedy and get wasted and revile neighbors and swindle others. It happens all the time. And each of these unrepentant sins are the same in the sense of God’s judgment. They all deserve his wrath. And we’re constantly reminded that “such were some of you” (1 Corinthians 6:11). You in the church.

That's poppycock. Outlaws have been celebrated, cheered, become folk heroes. Even some who have committed murder or theft, like Bonnie & Clyde. There are people right now donating money to the defense of the jackball who shot up the church full of Black people.

Let's not pretend that murder is 100% denounced and homosexuality is 100% celebrated. There are people who denounce and celebrate all kinds of sin. There are whole sections of videos in the adult section at Amazon celebrating adultery, sodomy, etc. Sexual "sins" are as celebrated as homosexuality, whether they're committed by gays or straights.

The only difference with gays is, it freaks people out, so they look and look for any explanation they can come up with to make it seem different. It isn't.

And, here's part of the problem. Are you actually saying that someone being gay is on par with murder?

I was having a conversation with a friend Saturday night and someone made a comment about the court ruling on this. He just shook his head and mumbled that it all pisses him off. I asked why? All he could say is...."All these gays just piss him off". I then asked, "how did your life changes after that ruling". He couldn't answer it with anything other than...."it just pisses me off".

The more I talk about this with people who are agains this ruling, the more I realize, they really have no idea why they are upset....they are just upset.

Poppycock? Meh, not so much really. As for the examples you mention, sure there will always be some sick, twisted individuals who celebrate even the most heinous crimeslike the church shooting or the Boston Marathon bombing. But for the most partsay 99.9% of peoplesociety is aghast at these terrible crimes. And out of the millions of criminals throughout history there have been a handful who have become folk heroes. But for the most part society vilifies murderers and thieves.

But the sex "sins" are different. Homosexuality is perfectly legal now, and the recent gay marriage is celebrated as societal progress. Go back half a century and I'm sure you could have found a great many laws on the books prohibiting homosexuality. Adultery isn't exactly celebrated. But for the most part it's not illegal, and most of society accepts it as a fact of life.

=====================

For the record, even though it's not a hotbutton issue for me, I have to admit that I'm not exactly in favor of the act of homosexuality. But it's the so-called "sin" I oppose, not the people. I don't dislike gay people. I have gay friends, and would hire, or work for, a gay person just the same as a straight person. And I wouldn't do or say something to belittle or offend a gay person. (Although I did crack a gay joke a few years back and later found out that I had offended a person I didn't know was gay. I felt terrible at my own ignorant comment. Live and learn.) Heck, I am sure there are plenty of gay people on this boardposters who I like and respect. /jmho

I often wonder if people remember we were supposed to be a republic, not a democracy, and for sure not a theocracy.

Just because something is against "God's law" it means absolute jack squat in our court system. This ruling is coming at a key time, its going to be a big issue come time for the general election, whoever ends up the GOP candidate is going to have to walk a fine line of not upsetting their party line, but they also need to court the independent voters who as a majority are in favor of marriage equality..

I guess I fail to see how homosexuality is being celebrated other than when a bunch of straight guys sit around and get turned on by two hot women going at it in a porno. Hmmmm...should we talk about sin?

This is a HUGE misconception with the gay rights movement. And, I will even say that part of the misconception is due to stuff the gay community does. But, the gay rights movement is not a celebration of homosexuality. It is a fight to be who you are and have the same rights as everyone else that is in a committed relationship. It's just that simple. The homophobes like the guy I mentioned above are the ones making this out to be more than what it is.

This ruling has absolutely NOTHING to do with anyone who is not gay. It does not change your life one iota. By this ruling, it all of a sudden doesn't make you a sinner or it doesn't automatically cause you to be living in sin or in a country any more full of sin. It absolutely has nothing to do with you.

I agree with this entirely. I'm exhausted from the vicious vitriol being spewed forth by a lot of my Christian brothers and sisters, and also encouraged at the grace and support I've seen from others.

The government not playing by our rules doesn't mean we are being persecuted, it just means we're not used to getting our way. I think, and most other insightful people I know usually agree, government should not have any role in marriage, but then again, the reason they do is because Christians set it up that way as the power group in the first place. This is a win for the rights of individuals, but it feels more like a band-aid win than a healing win. And I do have concerns about how the government will treat churches, parachurch and non-profit organizations in the future that don't recognize sam sex marriages, and also how this affects children who might be denied the right to a biological father or mother because of the desire of a gay married couple to have a kid. But I am absolutely glad that we are one step closer to people being free to be themselves.

You know what's celebrated in this country? Heterosexuality.

So I'd say the poppycock part of it all is the expectation that some -- well, most -- people can have a celebrated love without sin, but gays can't.

I recognize that we are in changing times and people were firmly brought up in a different environment. Sixty years ago, if you were forty or fifty and had "moderate" views, you probably held some positions about race equality regarded (fairly!) as pretty reprehensible today. And with all due respect, the equality some would seek to deny gays falls exactly in that category. Though, of course, I am sure we all have views that are lacking in understanding. And it is the views I oppose, not the people behind them -- who in this case have every power and capacity to change.

If the sex sins are different than other sins, fine, but they should all be viewed the same. Sodomy with your wife, no matter how much she's into the butt secks, should be denounced by Christians in equal amounts to homosexuality. Either the same or not at all (I'd prefer not at all).

I agree. But that's not out in the open public. So it's comparing two similar but completely different situations
