That last drive...

Recommended Posts

So today they ran it three times on the last drive and people still bitched.

Almost every time Imani Cross is in the game, the ball is given to him up the middle. If I knew that, Wisconsin knew it as well.

How about a two back set so it's harder to figure out what the play might be?

Langsdorf is getting it from everyone.

There are people that are for some reason upset because we didn't pass. Tommy with a whopping 39% completion rate today (11 of 28). If he completes the pass it's hailed as a gutsy call and we win the game. If he throws it incomplete there's probably a mob with pitchforks and torches waiting for Langsdorf outside the stadium.

Everyone else is upset because we ran three times up the middle with zero creativity. This argument makes sense.

At this point if they want to make even a bowl game, it's time to start runnin Tommy like a damn thumper back. Tommy Armstrong is the best running back on the team. And the fear of injury is a bullsh#t excuse too. The guy is 6-2, 220. He's also the most physical back on the the team. He aint gonna get hurt anymore running downhill than he will standing in the pocket for a second and half and then scrambling to death. And we know they have the designs in the book cuz we've seen em. Beautiful qb run designs in the 2nd quarter, and then never go back to them.

I agree with this. Tommy really is as close to Taylor Martinez as you could get in that he probably is a better runner than true thrower. I agree that the team would be better off maybe incorporating some more designed qb running plays or plays that give him the option to run but if Armstrong goes down. Oh man. I seriously couldn't watch. So much inexperience behind Armstrong I just think Nebraska would truly implode.

I guess you could argue that the season's a wash so you could just start running him more but I just think it would get downright ugly if he goes down.

So let me help you since you didnt watch the game. The coaches top running back was not in the game. Instead we head with our...well what is he now our 4th option and blast it into a sea of 11 people.

Run it three times while it forces them to use up time outs. How does criticism fall on Langsdorf for that?

Yes, run it three times is the right way to go.

Running it into the middle of the line where you have basically no chance to get a first down is not.

IIRC, 75% of our rushing yards to date were outside the tackles, so a$$hat decides to run 3 right into the middle......

I agree that we are better running outside and could have tried something with the fake jet to throw them off a little. So I was disappointed not going off tackle.

On the other hand you have Cross out there. A senior power runner and they're just lining up to play some smash mouth football. If it works it's not being second guessed.

I thought it was strange that he can probably lift up a house, yet goes down easily when someone touches him near his calves. :hmmph

Agree. That was brutal play calling. I could not believe Cross was taking the handoffs as he is our short yardage back and we needed yards to get a first down. Beyond dumb...did Langsdorf answer what he was thinking in the post game?

Yep. Pretty much everyone knew what was coming at that point. Put in our third string, short yardage specialist when we absolutely needed it most.

But I've read on here that he averages more than 5 yards a carry. Shouldn't he be able to get 10 on 3 carries?

Not when there are 17 guys between him and five yards downfield.

Ha :P That made me laugh a little. They could have run it off tackle. Would you have gone with Newby in this case (outside for example)?

Tommy is so much a better runner than Martinez. Not even close. Tommy has some wiggle and obvious knack for moving through traffic. Yes, Taylor had great speed, and had the ability that turned a lot of grinding 7 yard gains into 20yards-house. But for the sake of what I'm talking about-a grind it out running game that is in desperate need of some creativity, and a quarterback that is in desperate need of some comfort, Tommy's got everything we need in my opinion.

Basically go to a plan that I honestly thought we'd see from this staff to begin with. And I guess that's the most disappointing thing thus far is that they havent adjusted and coached to the abilities of the players for the sake of winning now. They are implementing their schemes as they see them regardless of skill with little adjustment, for the sake of building. Not saying that is wrong. But were we not lead to believe otherwise? This is why I preached about anyone could win 9 games with this schedule. But had I known what I know now, and have seen, those predicitions woudlve been tailored to like 6 or 7 wins. But I guess that's why theyre predicitions. Just glorified uneducated guesses.

I would like to have seen Newby off tackle - give him a chance to use his speed. Or TA on that pretty sweet QB counter that worked pretty well earlier.
