Terrell Newby

Agree 100% that far too many run calls are for our smaller speedy back to jam it straight ahead. We should be using Newby on pitches and stretches where he is more capable of turning 2 yard gains into 10 yard gains.

He does not have good vision or decision making to be our #1 option.

Terrell Newby averaged 5.3 yards per carry for the season, a perfectly Nebraska-like figure. An offense has to work between the tackles to establish everything else, so if your featured running back is averaging 5.3 yards going mostly up the middle, that shouldn't be your complaint.

Going strictly by the eyeball test, Newby appears to be good but not great running back, especially coming on the heels of non-stop Roy Helu, Rex Burkhead and Ameer Abdullah.

He didn't blossom in his Junior year, but he didn't falter. Yards after contact was never his strong suit. I don't think he had a single fumble.

I don't think he's that bad, either, but he doesn't make a strong case for more carries.

And still, he's probably our best running back at the moment.

It might be that simple.

Yeah, he's a good back. But maybe a step behind Helu, burkhead or Abdullah. And he didn't have a single fumble this year? If that's right, it's pretty remarkable. Have we ever had our main RB make it through a season with no fumbles before? I'm thinking no.

Below might be his best run of the year. He had a hole the size of a Mack truck for this one. He showed pretty good speed taking it to the house.

Another pattern emerging: carries by quarter:

1st - 38

2nd - 20

3rd - 28

4th - 16

So I'm sure they have a script to start the game. It's when we do our most running. As we get "off script" in the second quarter, Newby only got half as many carries. We do better in the third quarter but, despite only one game when we were forced to pass, his fewest carries come in the fourth.

I think he has terrible vision. Which in turn leads to indecisiveness. Just my opinion. I think the measurables are there. I think the talent is there. Vision is hard to quantify sometimes at the high school level when youre just that much better than everyone or are running behind a line that is just dominant. Look at some of Alabamas rbs. Great lines, just hit the hole and go. The special backs hit that hole then make the second and third levels miss.

Came out with the right idea. Run heavy including the first time this year where Newby carried it on three straight plays. Also got carries on three out of four plays. All in the first quarter. Kept the ball for 10 out of 15 minutes. And then .....

I don't remember, did Newby get hurt again? Didn't get any carries after the 13:00 mark of the second quarter.

I don't think he has terrible vision. I think - especially early in the year - he was always trying to bounce it outside. Improved quite a bit on that as the year went on.

His running in the Iowa game was awful. It was like he was seeking out the tackler.
