Spring Position Battles - Defensive Line

There is probably more depth with promising players in the defensive line than Nebraska has seen for several years...and playing in the Big Ten, I believe depth is absolutely crucial. Nobody skates through this conference without injuries.

So here's hoping that Nebraska coaches will get to choose the starting lineup, and not the injury reports. (Not being pessimistic, but hopeful.)

FA's development could end up being one of the single greatest factors in the team's defensive capabilities this season. Even with the lack of depth in some areas, I think they'll do a decent job stopping the run this year. What they need is those consistent pass rushers and having one at defensive end is one of the most critical parts of a defense.

The coaches said a few weeks ago that they had somewhere between 15-20 plays last year that should've been sacks but they whiffed on the play. Even an extra 5-10 sacks could've meant an extra win or two last season, in my opinion.

LJS Spring Practice Questions

2. Who becomes the trusted defensive ends to join that two-deep? Topping that list right now are Freedom Akinmoladun and Ross Dzuris. But that porch door is still swung wide-open for those like Sedrick King and Alex Davis and A.J. Natter, among others, to become relied on for reps in the fall. John Parrella likes the eagerness of his D-line to succeed, but as defensive coordinator Mark Banker said, that group has to grow and more consistently become the aggressor. "We just need to see, at this point in time, more physicality out of that group."

8. Can Khalil and Carlos Davis meet their coach’s challenge and get 2 percent better every day? The redshirt freshman defensive tackles are going to need to play. But how big will their roles be? They’ve got the chance, with the right amount of progress, to make a defensive tackle spot that also has Greg McMullen, Kevin Maurice and Kevin Williams, seem plenty strong even with the losses of Maliek Collins and Vincent Valentine.
