Gun Control

That guy on the show that John Stewart used to host said it best...the 2nd Amendment was about protecting people.  Gun dorks are dorks...you don't need anything more than pretty much a shotgun or musket...that is it.  The rest of the crap should be banned, that is not a violation of rights it is a smart move.  If you hunt, awesome (I know nothing about hunting) but rambo hunted with a knife or you can use a shotgun (do you hunt with those?) or a single shot rifle (is that a thing?)

and if you hunt and don't eat what you kill...you don't need to hunt because you can just go to the supermarket to get your freaking meat.

Fishing is okay.

I can agree with most of this except “single shot” hunting guns.  Pump action shotguns generally hold only 3-5 rounds.  This is great for bird hunting when they fly out in front of you.  I really appreciate the 2nd and 3rd chance because I generally waste the first one. Same with rifles, having a few rounds ready can be helpful if you miss and the deer gives a “what the heck was that!” Instead of taking off.

And lastly, it’s pronounced “drinking in a boat”...

The First Amendment is not absolute. There are reasonable restrictions allowed by law: obscenity, child pornography, threats, etc.

The Second Amendment is not absolute. These are devices designed to kill, we should have reasonable restrictions.

We can debate what is a reasonable restriction and what may be too restrictive. But what the NRA, Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and most of the GOP are doing is disgusting. It is not some righteous stand against impeding citizen's rights; it is about lining their pockets. It is about blood money.

Most rifles used for hunting big game (can't do that with a shotgun) holds maybe 4 rounds and you have to use the bolt action to move the next one into the chamber.  It also takes time to load.  That is not conducive to killing a lot of people quickly.

That’s why I have zero problem with them...

I'm big in to hunting and do it as much as I can. I also shoot sporting clays and blue rock as much as I can. I use semiautomatic shotguns for all of my shooting. I don't own any rifles or anything similar to an AR. I'm also about as Republican as one can get. I'm all for stiffer background checks, I just don't think it's going to change a whole lot. I'm to the point though, that I hope that legislation passes and sitting back and seeing what people are going to blame if it doesn't seem to work.If it does pass through and things do magically change, then I'll be more than happy to admit that I was wrong.

I'm a firm believer that we need to look more in to the mental health of our country. I've been a teacher for 18 years and I've seen a big change in students over that time. Stiffer background checks are all well and good, but we need to work on violence in these kids every day lives that desensitizes them to it. I also hate how much the Democrats and Republicans use things like gun control to try to politicize every little thing in this country. I'm probably not making much sense with most of this, I have two kids screaming for a snack while I type this.

On a different note, good luck this school year. We start teacher meetings tomorrow.

The Gun Lobby’s interpretation of the Second Amendment is one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word fraud, on the American People by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime. The real purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure that state armies – the militia – would be maintained for the defense of the state. The very language of the Second Amendment refutes any argument that it was intended to guarantee every citizen an unfettered right to any kind of weapon he or she desires. – Warren Burger, Conservative Supreme Court Chief Justice.

How the NRA Rewrote the Second Amendment

The Founders never intended to create an unregulated individual right to a gun. Today, millions believe they did. Here’s how it happened.

There are mentally ill people in every country. America has no greater amount than anywhere else.

What we do have more than anywhere else are guns. That's the problem.

No other country in the world has the same problems that we do. Guns have been around for a long time and even the guns that are being used by these crazies. If you don't think that we need to look at mental problems in our country, you are in denial.

There is zero evidence that mental health issues are causing the kind of violence we're talking about in this thread

Ok,I'll never convince you and tha's ok. I hope that they do get legislation passed. I just can't wait to see what everyone blames if all of the guns are illegal and bad things like these keep happening.

Clearly ALL guns can't be illegal. We need to hunt to control animal populations all over the country.

What we need is common sense, and to get away from the current gun culture in this country.

Almost every other nation has figured this out.

I agree with the common sense, but not the other part. Like I have said, I'm big in to hunting and other activities. I have been around countless people that are carrying guns and I've never feared for my life or been worried about being shot. I agree that there are certain guns that have no place in our society, but to just blame guns in all of this is ridiculous. Once all of the guns have been banned that people want banned, what are you going to blame for any shooting that occurs? It's easy to blame guns, and once again I do agree that there are some guns that should be banned, but guns are not the only issue here. Failure to admit this will keep our country going down this destructive path.
