Yes, but you're applying logic to an organization that has proven time and time again to be morally and ethically bankrupt.  Logic is out the window with this current version of the GOP. They've shown zero fidelity to, or understanding of, the Constitution and the rule of law.  This situation just puts another exclamation point on that.  They'll either takeover and create an authoritarian state or wither away on the vine.
