Even the former Soviet countries still have a lot of issues. E.g. if you want to get a driver’s license in Ukraine (based on pre-war knowledge) in any amount of decent time, you bribe someone, and then you don’t even have to pass the test. Or if you want your passport interview fast tracked you bribe them for that. There is a lot of corruption like that even in the local government, which is why I’m never surprised to see Zelensky firing people or having them arrested for stealing war funds.

They had that form of government too long and still haven’t completely changed the mindset.

My brother in law grew up in Romania, the stories he tells about what a freaking mess it is (was, to some degree) are comical.

It is almost a free for all.

Know a few Albanian immigrants, craaaazy stories. One tried to illegally immigrate to Italy by boat and almost drown, but he dgaf, he just wanted out of that place. Also, worked with someone who immigrated from Poland as a kid under communist rule, then happened to visit again during their uprising in the late 80's, also some crazy stories.

Dude, the smaller commie ruled countries were like the Hunger Games...you pretty much were just trying to survive.

Insane stuff.

Our old next door neighbor's parents were born in Latvia.  The escaped after WW2 to come to America.  Their parents had to deal with both Nazi's and the Commies.  They said, their parents said, the Commies were much tougher to deal with than the Nazi's.

Crazy thing, when the commies left, Latvia granted all kids of former citizens, citizenship.  They just moved to Latvia.

Maybe not a good time, but they didn't seem worried.

I mean, technically commie Russia has been gone for roughly 30 years. Putin's Russia is an oligarchy, with a free market economy for anyone who gives Putin his vig.  The common link for the past 400 years or so is a willingness to sacrifice millions of your own citizens lives for a really dark and brutal vision of manifest destiny.

They are commies.  It’s the same process with a different name.  Don’t give them the satisfaction.
