If you had a prior coach at Alabama who won 6 national titles, it shows that it can be done there, and already has taken place. Saban is obviously a great coach, but like NFL coaches say - Bama recruiting is the equivalent of getting 15 1st round draft picks every single year. Makes winning A LOT easier

This could be said of every coach succeeding Tom Osborne. And Tom inherited a two-time national champion.

In the 10 years Nebraska was "struggling" under Solich and Callahan, three different Alabama coaches were posting 4-7, 3-8, 4-9, 6-6, and 6-7 seasons (not to mention a couple 7-5 seasons, and seasons that didn't officially count because of NCAA violations.)

Alabama got Saban in 2007 and they were back in business. Maybe our fifth coach  is a charm.

This is true. And I also think Saban has a lot to do with getting “15 first round picks” every year.

If there was actually a choice, which obviously there wasn’t, you should take Saban over Frost every single day of the week and that’s not meant to disparage Scott Frost in any way.

Uh no, I shouldn’t take Saban over Frost on any day, nor would I. You’re welcome to prefer him though. And that’s not meant to disparage Nick Saban in any way.

They were 10-2 in 2005....I agree the downward spiral was in place, but again when you can recruit like they have, I could coach that team to at least 9 wins a year.

Presumably Alabama could have hired any coach they wanted, and they went with Mike DuBose, Dennis Franchione, and Mike Shula, who posted seasons that would still be unacceptable by Nebraska standards. No offense, Big Ern, but they were probably better football coaches than you.

Some of us remember being asked to be patient going back to the early 2000s and through several coaches.

We can still do it, of course.  But we do remember that and it's been a long haul and the words are old.

I still predict a Husker win at Michigan.  :dunno

It's all we have, there is no plan B for a hyperactive fan base and virulent media presence.  Honestly, at this point I think it would be better for the program if 67K die hards started showing up at games looking to see what happens as opposed to 90K screamers wearing FROST ALERT T-SHIRTS.

I know we're great fans, and I've never known the good times having moved to Lincoln from Iowa in 2010, but the searchlight is just a bit too toxic if you ask me.  I'm with you though, I was arguing with my FIL that outside the confines of Memorial I think there's a reasonable shot that these Huskers surprise Michigan.  20-30 percent even?

Bama fan here. A friend of mine, that is a big Nebraska fan, showed me this thread so thought I’d chime in. As an Alabama fan, I’m not going to pretend to know the ins and outs of the Nebraska program like people on this forum or diehard Husker fans. Because of my friend though, I have kept up with Nebraska over the last 10 plus years and have rooted for them to get back to where they traditionally belong, and that is as one of the powers in college football. Also, as a fan of CFB tradition, I have a lot of respect for what Nebraska has done over the years and the way they did it.

Ironically, I have actually made the “Saban was 7-6 in his first year” comparison to my friend to help ease the pain of starting 0-2. It probably seems like a lifetime ago for CFB fans that hate Alabama but before Saban, Alabama was in the dumps. I remember going to the Alabama v Miss St game in 2006 and by the end of the game some fans were wearing bags over their heads and as fans streamed out before the game was even over a Miss St fan shouted out “Don’t leave yet, we lost to Maine!”. We were pumped up beyond belief when Saban was hired but when we lost 4 straight to LSU, Miss St, Lousiana Monroe and Auburn in 2007, it seemed like things might continue down the mediocre road.

I think your guy Tanner Farmer summed it up perfectly. The culture must change, either you buy in or you don’t, and you hit the road. The culture didn’t change overnight for Alabama, it took growing pains and weeding out the guys who didn’t want to buy into what Saban and his staff was selling. Obviously, recruiting is extremely important to and this will be a big recruiting season for Frost and company. They need to get their guys in that will buy into this new culture with a combination of talent and character that meshes with what Frost is trying to do. It's also about developing talent and then getting the most of that player's abilities by pushing him to be the best he can be. That is something I think Frost can do as a coach.

As an outsider looking in, I’ve really liked what I see from Scott Frost. I am impressed with the loyalty he gets from his players (as witnessed at UCF), and I think he’s one of the best young coaches coming up right now. I really thought he would be the best fit back when Riley was hired but I understand at the time he had no HC experience. Now that he is where he belongs, I honestly think it will be maybe 3 seasons and he’ll have Nebraska competing for Big 10 Titles (don’t shoot me if I’m wrong). So, keep the faith Nebraska fans. It’s gonna be a long year but I think the future will be bright….can’t say that I’d be able to say similar things about FSU’s future with Taggert there haha.
