That sucks, maybe not even so much for the student but more for their family. 4 Link to comment
nic
I would surround the building so no one could escape without being identified. Then get on a loud speaker or building intercom and say you have 1 hour to vacate the building. If you do not and you are a student you will be expelled for the semester, receive incomplete grades and will have to retake the classes next semester. If you are faculty, you will be placed on unpaid leave pending a hearing to see if we will retain you next semester. If you not affiliated with the university, hang tight. The swat team team will be in to get you in 1 hour. Then arrest them if they leave. If no one leaves, the university could clean house in one fell swoop. “The occupation of Siemens Hall and Nelson Hall East is causing ongoing inability to open other campus facilities,” a statement from the university read. “Since Monday night, protestors have attempted several times to break into multiple locked buildings with the intention of either locking themselves in, vandalizing, or stealing equipment. Vandalism and theft have continued across campus.” Officials said the campus will be closed through May 10, and work and academic instruction will take place remotely. 1 2 1 Link to comment
Moiraine
People aged 15-25 want something to be excited about. Sometimes it’s a legitimate thing that the old people don’t have enough energy to get excited about. Sometimes it’s a stupid thing. The hard thing here is the Israel government is s#!tty in multiple ways right now, but the area they are attacking is governed by terrorists and the protestors are being insanely hyperbolic. They want a ceasefire or a permanent end, but ignore the details. E.g. Hamas has not agreed to release the hostages in exchange for a ceasefire. 1 1 Link to comment
nic
Finally. They really need to go after the outsiders that are instigating some this stuff. And what about the faculty? Columbia University late Wednesday afternoon said it had begun suspending students who participated in anti-Israel protests and defied an order to clear encampments by 2 p.m. A university spokesperson condemned antisemitic language and calls for violence as “simply abhorrent.” He said that academic leaders have been negotiating with protesters since last Wednesday but have been unable to reach an agreement. “As the message indicated, the encampment, has created an unwelcoming environment for many of our Jewish students and faculty and a noisy distraction that interferes with the teaching, learning and preparing for final exams,” he said, adding that professors and students as well as “external actors” have contributed to creating a hostile environment. The university spokesman said that the students who agreed to leave the encampment by the deadline will be able to complete the semester, while those who did not will be placed on suspension and ineligible to complete a semester or graduate and restricted from all academic, residential, and recreational spaces. 2 Link to comment
nic
Mayor Adams and the police have put one name to the outsiders spinning up the students at Columbia. A video of Lisa Fithian. A professional 'called to arms by who'. https://www.foxnews.com/us/nypd-release-video-showing-professional-protest-consultant-columbia-university Mayor Adams: "These external actors are obviously not students, and their presence on campus is a violation of Columbia’s clearly stated policy," Adams said. "This group…is an outside agitator with a history of escalating a situation and trying to create chaos. It is our belief they are now actively co-opting what should be a peaceful gathering. This is to serve their own agenda. They are not here to promote peace or unity or allow a peaceful display of one's voice. They are here to create discord and divisiveness." 1 Link to comment

This is why they need to arrest these people for something. They need to figure out who is actual students and who are the outside influencers and then figure out who is funding and motivating them. Enhance
Something I feel like is getting conveniently overlooked by some people in the whole Columbia University thing. According to my research, Columbia (along with most universities) have clearly stated policies surrounding protests or demonstrations, where they can happen, how long they can happen for, etc. The policies seem quite fair and reasonable, allowing for demonstrations while still not interfering with other students or the going-ons of the university. So, if my facts are right, the Columbia students began a multi-day encampment that violated several university policies and wouldn't disperse, so they were arrested on Apr. 18. Then it all escalates into the building takeover that ended in more arrests last night. Now, someone can certainly tell me if my facts are wrong, but all these people screaming about how Columbia is in the wrong and mishandled this whole thing... seems a lot like the pot calling the kettle black. Shouldn't the responsibility be on the demonstrators to do things the right way? Free speech without infringing on the rights of others yeah? 2 1 Link to comment
