Off year elections

Recommended Posts

Worked with a group to do lots of Get Out The Vote communications in FL, VA, KY and more for city/state candidates.  There are a lot of groups recognizing that we need to win ballots on every level to make change.  Fingers crossed we flip some cities/Counties blue!!

Our local school board (in a small town) is having a bit of a controversial election period. There are 3 spots open on a 5 member board, with 6 people running in a non-partisan race. 3 of the candidates have experience with education, curriculum, and local government and have provided detailed responses to all of the local media and non-profit groups who seek make the process transparent.

Two of the candidates are relative unknowns in town (where everyone knows everyone) and did not respond to questions in the local voters guide. However, they are running as a team and LOTS of large yard signs have been placed all over town. However, the yard signs are not in the yards of actual residents; they are placed in the yards of rental properties and businesses. Finally these candidates posted some info to a local Facebook group and identified themselves as the "conservative" candidates. They have no experience in education administration, other than one of them having home-schooled her children and leading a bible study. They offered no actual ideas relative to actual district policies, but they are riling up the conservative locals around here.

And the hot-button issue for the local right wingers over the past year or so has been the high school mascot. You see, we used to have a native american logo and were called "the Braves", before the school board changed it last year (a 3-2 vote) after a long battle. So the people who are pissed off about changing the mascot are backing the no-name no-experience conservative candidates (who have also been spreading lies about the alleged cost of the mascot change). While everyone else who actually cares about education and school administration are voting the non-partisan candidates (who do happen to be liberal, but have not taken the bait to engage in partisan mudslinging).

Why are 'conservative' candidates so hell bent on culture war? Why not try to win by, I don't know, being a better candidate?

Ugh - my mantra the last week has been ... "thank goodness for the engagement and longevity of youthful voters".

It's going to take all the boomers dying off to correct the attitudes I think.  I know horrible people will still be around but it won't be such a large number of them.

Congratulations, GOP! You retained governorship in a deep red state Trump won by 17% that has been GOP 24 of the last 28 years, and the Lieutenant Governor takes over for his boss. You should be super proud of this win! Completely ignore everything else.
