Crazy....there's even Walmarts in some C size towns.  I guess Walmart must think there's enough business there.

Not counting Lincoln and Omaha

Which ones have Walmarts?  my guesses are in bold.

Point taken.

But my overall point of towns are only going to grow and flourish if businesses are willing to come there still stands, I believe.  The government can't "make" this happen alone.  And if businesses aren't showing interest in investing there, I really think it's a waste of tax dollars for the government to invest in the area.  I don't think many would argue that.

I think the gist of the plan is that they can draw industry to these areas for people to do what the plan develops.  It seems like it's around a lot of clean energy and new technologies for agriculture.  Precision Ag is already becoming a major segment of agriculture. That draws tech people to rural America.  If we are going to build more clean energy in rural areas, that takes people and industry to do that.

And that makes sense.  But someone earlier mentioned about how great it was that a President was actually coming through for these rural voters and getting them what they wanted.  The average Joe living in small town Nebraska probably won't see their lives change that much...

Yes, they actually can.  I currently don't have fiber optic at my house.  It's literally 1/2 mile away.  If, either through this or the infrastructure bill, would supply fiber to everyone, that would be great.  If I was in an ag tech industry, or equipment industry, it could change what I do..etc.

Dang, McCook has one?

That is a lot more than I would have thought.  I feel like I had a bit of "small town" bias.

I wouldn't call those small towns either, I was probably being generous with my qualifications of school classifications.

I think of small towns as less than 2-3 thousand people.  People move to bigger towns close to home when they graduate, if not further away.  The ease of transportation and the fact that it just makes more sense for people to live in one "condensed" area instead of small areas spread out throughout the countryside.

There are probably 20-30 towns like this within 1 hour from McCook.  McCook might see growth; much of it comes from these towns getting smaller.  (would be my guess)

Small towns close to Large towns/small cities might see growth because of being "bedroom communities" though: Seward, Ashland, etc..hell, Elkhorn and Gretna used to be small towns and have exploded!  And all the old timers hate it!!!

I was thinking 4,000 and less.

Elkhorn and Gretna are really good examples of what can happen.

Really depends on what lens you're looking through.

To the majority of americans, every town in Nebraska except for Lincoln/Omaha is a small town. I grew up in Columbus and thought of it as a normal sized town, so the small towns would've been 5,000 or less. To someone in NYC Lincoln is a small town.
