Eye on the Illini: What Does Illinois Bring to the Table

Recommended Posts

For me, I don't see Illinois bringing much of anything to the table.  After hearing praise upon praise at really every position for us and how well we are progressing, I don't see how this isn't a 3-4 TD win.  This is a perfect warm-up game with the starters not even playing in the 4th quarter.

Go Big Red!

It is when it's Melvin Gordon and your LBs ignore the gameplan. Not so much when it's Isaiah Williams and the defense does what it's supposed to.

It's amazing to me how no one on this board seems to remember Chase Brown, who might be the  best RB in the entire league.  Isaiah Williams is a WR.

They probably aren't running jet sweeps with the starting RB though. And Brown is good but there are a lot of RBs in the league I'd take over him, Ibrahim and Goodson for starters.

1 of those losses required the worst clock management I have ever seen in a NU football game.  NU totally got Rileyed in the 2015 game.

You mean that option "no pass" rpo play?  Yeah that brutal.  But with all due respect, the worst was the Wisconsin game.  When they called 3 straight runs up the center's anus. And punted.  Still pisses me off because that game was won.

True about the jet sweeps.  I just rewatched highlights of the first half of the 408 game and Gordon was just busting normal runs, nothing at all special.  Toss plays, draws, all going for 10/20/40. I had completely forgotten also that Wisconsin fumbled 4 times in the first 20 minutes of that game, losing 3. NU was up 17-3. Amazing.  Without that start and if he'd played all 4 quarters he may have run for 600 yards that day.

Yeah the jet sweeps were the big ten championship when Gordon was the #3 behind Ball and White. Wisconsin moved more toward WRs running them now which I why I went with Williams for Illinois, but as far as I know all of the comments about jet sweeps are flashbacks to Gordon. Can't specifically recall other games where it was a serious problem.

On offense, their WR situation might be worse than ours was last year. On defense, they've got some solid LBs, but that's it. And they're transitioning to a 3-4 without having much size on the line, so...

Ok Ok Ok. we can casually reference that game, but we can NOT post video evidence of that game on this website.  Thank you.

Really, only 6-2? Felt like we've had worse luck against them

Two years ago they knocked us around on their field, and it took a 21-3 run starting late in the third quarter to eke out a four-point win. It felt like a loss.

But Frost is actually 2-1 against Illinois, including the 2019 win in Champaign. Shockingly.

2019 didn't feel like a loss at all to me. It felt like we tried everything possible we could do to lose, and then we were still good enough to win. We had 674 yards, and everything they had that game (other than one long run) was a direct gift from our offense. Now a 674-299 yardage advantage should be something like 63-17 so it was frustrating that we had to eke it out, but it felt like finding a way to win despite emptying your entire gun into your foot.
