NOT a great day for the Boston Marathon ... miserable driving rain here, enough that they cancelled the Red Sox. Would suck to be running in this.

so you can't carry a knife in London, now? I can't remember ever NOT carrying a knife. Thank the good Lord I was born in this great country.... #USA

Speaking as someone who has had her car stolen from her home, who has been robbed at gunpoint (and yes, shot at afterward) and has had break in's to the car multiple times - a knife, or a gun were and would have been useless. I think it's interesting what a false sense of security they must give folks. And really, who wants to walk around arming themselves for "when" the bad things happen. It must be exhausting.

FWIW - I used to carry a tiny pocket knife on my key chain. I actually used it a ton. But after 911 it wasn't allowed on airplanes, then when I'd get screened going into hospitals for work it got taken away, when I did jury duty it was confescated - all perspective I guess. Haven't missed it for 10 years or so. Not a big deal to follow the rules.

Hey if you are cool and like basketball and brackets and such, head over to the contest crib. You don't need to know a lot about bball to win. It is an ESPN Tourney challenge and search Huskerboard to join it would be super fun if we could get some more people.

Just had a conversation with a coach in LA who told me that Bookie accepted 100K+ in assets and cash over the last two years.
-
@Decked are you asking why a person that has proof of this should report it if he/she doesn't benefit? Want to make sure that I understand who/what you were responding to.

Or is it possible that a female coach might just recruit in a different way (not better or worse) or potentially recruit a different sort of athlete? That perhaps she surrounds herself with kids who have the maturity to see talent, coaching ability and etc. and want to be around it and learn from the coach regardless of his/her sex. I'd really be most curious to talk to a high caliper high school ball player and outline the record, history, coaching tree etc and ask if it matters if it's a man or woman.

Anybody, ever buy travel insurance for an overseas trip, or would you?
-
Yes for my big trips. You have to typically ask for additional health related coverage (in addition to cancellation, weather delays etc). Honestly it would depend (for me) where I was travelling. A place like England and other European spots healthcare is pretty good -and sometimes out of pocket costs for an emergency are cheaper than what you'd pay with insurance. If you're going more "rustic" make sure you have evacuation insurance for emergency, and make sure they promise you an english speaking/trained physician. Check your ins to see what they cover if you are away and depending on where you work - my employer had some supplemental international support. There are also a couple free tools for international care that I can post when I get home if you like.

Been contemplating buying a camera for awhile. Any recoomendations for a first time buy. I want something capable, but not for the crazy prices I've seen. Something that could handle night photography too.
I've always wanted to get into photography, I used to be a good artist in high school and can still draw a bit. I'm going to Europe for the first time in a few months and thought it would be good to have a camera there.

I may have mistyped @RedDenver - I meant the Rebel is a good camera to learn manual on and yet have auto options that have good outcomes.

I'd handle both Canon's and Nikon's - you'll find one feels more natural for you than another. I agree with RedDenver. I shoot Canon's. My first big girl camera was a Powershot SX30. It gave me an option to learn manual settings and had a great zoom lens but it wasn't overly complicated. I replaced it with a T6 (?) before a trip to Africa as I wanted the option to change some new lenses for wildlife shots. I (personally) think the Rebels are a decent price point if you want to truly go manual. If you're just starting I'd make sure it has a built in flash as you don't want to have to purchase that separately, and if you take some classes or play you'll be able to photograph most everything without a flash anyway. Some now offer the option to transfer pics taken via wifi (vs. using a cord to download them) but you pay a price for that.
