No. 28: RB Aaron Green

5-11/191, San Antonio (Texas) James Madison

Why he's close: Green may be the most explosive back in the country. He is nearly impossible for defensive backs to cover and can make defenders whiff in the open field. He is a serious home-run threat with the skills of a potential kick and punt returner.

Why he's not there: He needs to become a more consistent pass catcher. At times he allows the ball to get to his body and struggles adjusting while the ball is in the air. If a back can't catch passes like a receiver, he won't play on every down. Rivals linky

Nice little blurb about Aaron in Rivals.

Yeah FSU picked up Wilder yesterday, I also watch him play. He's definitely the best player on his team, with some work will be a good player. Anyway, here are the people Aaron would be competing with in the schools we are competing with.

Nebraska - nobody

Cal - Darren Ervin :star :star :star

- Daniel Lasco :star :star :star :star

Florida State - Eric Beverly :star :star :star

- Devonta Freeman :star :star :star :star

- James Wilder Jr. :star :star :star :star :star

Texas - Joe Bergeron :star :star :star

- Malcolm Brown :star :star :star :star :star

Cal is also in the running for two other backs, Amir Carlisle and Brendon Bigelow.

Thank you orangebloods, if Malcolm isnt putting any pressure on Aaron then Texas doesnt mave much of a shot.

Madison’s Aaron Green and Steele’s Malcolm Brown have become close friends through a common bond as two of the top-ranked running backs in the nation.

Brown and Green meet for the first time on the field at 6 p.m. Saturday, when Steele and Madison face off in an ESPN-televised game at Heroes Stadium.

Before their game kicks off, the duo sat down together with Express-News staff writer Lorne Chan to discuss their experiences as blue-chip recruits living 10 miles apart.

Are you ready for ESPN?

AG: I probably won’t remember the game’s on ESPN while we’re playing. People are making this game out to be me against Malcolm, but there are 20 other guys on the field. I hope Malcolm and I don’t act like it’s me vs. him.

MB: I’m not getting stressed about it. We’re two kids trying to do what we do.

This is all a lot of hype. It’s going to be another non-district football game. ESPN just makes it a little bit bigger than what it is.

A little bit?

MB: OK, a lot bigger.

AG: I haven’t seen Malcolm play much, so I might give in to the hype myself. In a falsetto voice: “Oh my gosh, it’s Malcolm Brown. I just want to touch him.”

I hope it’s standing room only, and it’s going to be crazy. It comes with the territory, though. We’ve had a lot of attention and a lot of expectations.

How have you dealt with the attention?

AG: It’s a blessing, but at the same time, it’s a burden. Some people treat you differently. They put you on a pedestal, and I’d rather be treated like everybody else. I don’t like all the attention.

MB: My friends will joke around about it, and that makes me feel better. When they’re making fun of me and doing things like going, “Ooh, Malcolm Brown just walked into the building,” it helps you stay normal.

I don’t want to be anyone’s idol or anything. I’m only 17.

AG: I was leaving church one time, walking by some 8-year-old kids. One kid goes, “How do you not know Malcolm Brown? He’s a beast.”

That just put a smile on my face. It made my day to hear some little kid looking up to Malcolm.

MB: It’s one of the coolest feelings when the little kids know who you are. But like Aaron said about being on a pedestal, I’d rather everybody thought of me as a regular person.

How has your friendship grown?

AG: We were on the same track team in seventh grade. He was quiet and was one of the youngest people. I remember him, but I don’t remember him saying anything. Now we’ve gotten to know each other really well.

MB: We were roommates for a week (at July’s Top Gun camp in Virginia). Aaron’s real cool. Sometimes when you don’t know somebody, you don’t know if it’s going to be weird. But we got along right away.

AG: Malcolm was singing or watching cartoons the entire time. He seems quiet, but once you know him, he’s goofy.

MB: Aaron’s a good friend and a great guy. He’s a really humble, Christian man.

Has talking to each other helped?

AG: It lets you know you aren’t in it alone. There are other guys around here getting recruited, but not the same way Malcolm and I are.

We don’t really talk about recruiting now, but we used to early on. It never hurts to hear from someone else who’s going through the same thing as you are.

Do you consider being teammates in college?

AG: That would be cool. Malcolm committing doesn’t really affect what I pick, but it does put some pressure on me. Malcolm picking Texas makes me want to go to Texas more.

MB: I’m not going to put any pressure on him. Playing on the same team isn’t something we really talk about that much. It’s more of a “what if” type thing.

Aaron, how close are you to committing?

AG: I’m kind of close, but I’m going to take my time. It’s not as hard to make a decision when you’ve got it down to four schools. I’m just going to take my college visits first.

If I’m picking a team, who do I want at running back?

MB: Aaron. Speed and quickness.

AG: Malcolm. Take the speed and power.

How many yards will your opponent have on Saturday?

AG: I hope Malcolm gets 50 yards. That’d be nice.

MB: Aaron will be in the negatives. This is the Knights’ defense we’re talking about.

The mood in this thread changes so quickly. Every little piece of info that comes out sends the masses into a frenzy. 3 days ago that bleacher report slideshow was being posted and everyone was freaking out thinking it was down to Cal and NU. Then a couple of articles come out leading up to the Malcolm vs. Aaron game tonight that seem to be pro-texas (which makes sense because they both live in Texas, are playing the game in Texas, and are high-level Texas recruits) and the mood becomes somber with some posters. Good to see a lot of you with your heads on straight. I think the facts are out there that we are in very, VERY good shape. I mean we kinda gave up on a 4* Standard that was really interested, because we felt so good about AG.

So here's my advice for all those NU'ers who will get a little nervous after the game tonight when the Texas articles start flying in about these two beasts both playing for their team: Ignore it. We are in the driver's seat. It's all going to be golden Ponyboy. Just wait and see.

He's running good so far. He has only gotten the ball twice with 3:30 left in the 1st quarter. Green has 1 TD and the other time he got the ball the qb fumbled the handoff.

Malcolm Brown had one decent 11 yard run, otherwise the Madison defense is shutting him down completely.

Madison has a DB Andre Wiggins, He has no stars and no offers but the kid is playing lights out.

brown 14 carries, 45 yards and just caught a touchdown.

green has about 67 yards and 2 touchdowns. right now, green has looked a lot better than brown. brown hasn't gotten any holes but he also hasn't made any plays.

green's second touchdown was nice. went one direction, got in trouble, reversed and reversed again from about 25-30 yards out. from this one game it certainly looks like green is a much shiftier runner than brown. but it's only one game.

Aaron Green

We don’t do percentages around here, but if you’re handicapping Green’s likelihood to attend Texas with fellow stud running back Malcolm Brown, the odds have gotten A LOT better. There are a couple of forces at play here. A significant amount of moving parts.

{Dude}Things have come to light.{/Dude}

As far as 2011 is concerned the first domino in the AG sweepstakes has fallen. Austin Seferian-Jenkins is out of the picture when it looked like he’d surely eat up a ship.

Secondly, it has been said that this is the golden age of Texas recruiting and therefore Mack is going to strike while the iron is hot, in other words, he’ll take a full class if it means the bluest of the blues. Remember, the staff has even brought up the subject of gray-shirting to at least one member of the current commit list. That’s your tale tell sign.

Finally, for the 2011 players in this soap opera, Green has now cooled on going out of state and sees the true value of playing ball close to home, especially now that it’s “cool” to be part of a dynamic running back duo instead of being the lone stud.

Thank you Reggie and Lendale, Cadillac and Ronnie, Ingram and Richardson.

All Green needs to do is recruit Texas a little and this can happen and we hear he’s doing just that. And Texas is listening now that Brown has been secured.

The one ***** in the armor is how the staff perceives an extra back affecting the talented 2012 crop of running backs. Here’s what we heard this week.

Johnathan Gray is as good if not better than Malcolm Brown, but there will be a battle for his services with childhood favorite Texas Tech and the usual suspects from out of state.

But the staff realizes this will be a battle regardless of who’s on the Texas roster in 2011, and Gray’s the type of back that really isn’t scared of competition. At least he shouldn’t be. Plus, he knows Kenny Williams will be at Tech and Brandon Williams is already at Oklahoma.

So Texas adding Green may not be the deal breaker we thought it was.

Also, aside from Gray, there’s a feeling from folks who would know that Barry Sanders, Jr. and Trey Williams, two excellent backs, are viable candidates for the 2012 tailback slot if the staff wants two backs in the 2011 class and happen to miss on Gray for whatever reason.

Add this all up, and it appears as if the staff is really considering snatching up a specialist like Green. They get the third down back Greg Davis loves as well as an electric return specialist.

(Care to guess which returner/speedster Green would be replacing on the current roster during the 2011 season? Hint: It’s not Marquis Goodwin.)

So Green’s recruitment is shaping up to be reminiscent of the fortunate recruiting bounces we got with Mike Davis, Roy Miller, and Christian Scott, but we were probably due for some good news at the running back position.

And finally for percentage honks, and at the risk of being dubbed a percentage monkey, I’d say we’re a slight favorite at this point to land Green based on everything we’re hearing. Call it 40 percent over Nebraska and FSU’s 30 percent. Now if you told me the staff truly wants the the lightning to go with Malcom’ Brown’s thunder, this percentage doubles.

these guys make me laugh

so according to this dude Austin didnt decide to play for Washington , texass didnt want him no more cuz he ate too much.Im sure they never really wanted him anyways. :sarcasm
