DC Candidates?

Recommended Posts

A few other names to throw into the WAG for AD mix: Ron Vanderlinden of Penn State. Tim DeRuyter of aTm. Jim Heacock of Ohio State. Vic Koenning from Illinois.

This is my wild assed guess that I mentioned in another thread a while back. Some tOSU fan pointed out that Heacock is likely to retire rather than taken another DC job. So he's probably not a possibility.

Do I know that these guys are getting a look? No. But they are all DC candidates. And all will soon be looking for a new gig, most likely. That makes them more likely than most of the guesses I've seen on this board in the past week.

Right school. Wrong guy. At least thats one contact.

Larry Johnson Sr has had his named throwin out there. Especially with the recruitment of Jamil Pollard becoming public.

Right school, wrong guy? I don't get it. Are you saying Vanderlinden is not from PSU (he is). Or are you saying there's someone else at PSU who we'd take before him?

Someone else before him. See speed's post above yours.

Ahhhh. Thanks. LINK

yes please...

Why does Ekeler's name keep popping up? No way in hell. There's a better chance that monkeys will come flying out of Lil Red's butt than for that to happen.

Why? He is a great coach.

He should have used those great coaching skills to mold more than 1 or 2 good linebackers his entire time here.

He did a great job with Dillard. Fisher & Compton both won Big12 Fr Honors while he was here. Rememeber we only played 2 LB's while he was here & his recruits were for another defensive scheme. Gomes played the Peso while he was here not sure if that was his guy or Sanders. You can't blame this yrs poor LB play on him when he was not the coach this yr. (Except David he played amazing)

A great position coach. Maybe. But he's not a DC. He does have great vertical leap though.

I highlighted the key word.

Really I think Ekeler gets viewed in a more positive light than necessary because we all just love the guy and his crazy energy on the sideline, as well as his considerable hops. I think with that awesomeness comes a higher estimation of his coaching abilities than Bo obviously had. It is pretty hard for us total bystanders to judge how much impact a coach has had on a player's development, but I think Dillard was more about Dillard than it was about Ek. And Dillard finally getting a chance to play. Not sure you can thank Ek for that either.

The other thing: I believe Bo really took on the LBs as a personal responsibility to whip them into shape in at least one of the years Ekeler was here, probably his last - because he had to. Not to mention, Ekeler's time here saw pretty much the erosion of his position from the starting defensive menu. Even in non passing situations.

Last thing is Ekeler had an early rep as a recruiting ace, but that didn't turn out as good as hoped either. I think if Ekeler was really a great positions coach, he'd still be that here.

I don't think there's any way he comes here (or should) to be the DC. I could say giving JP a promotion if that's what it took to keep him around, but right now I am thinking best case options would be names like Zook or Johnson.

Dillard played as a result of Carl.

When can we expect an announcement? The quicker we get someone in place the better.

Don't know. Practices will start up soon so I'm sure it will be a topic in the post practice presser. I guess it depends when the ink is dry. NU will have to post the opening first so watch the website for the announcements. I would guess it would be after that comes down.

Is Zook not a good, reasonable possibility? I honestly haven't really looked into the whole DC discussion very much.

No I think he would be a good hire, but think he may go to a FCS team as a head coach.

I would think this would depend heavily on the money we offer.

If we try a cost-effective route, Zook would be a great hire--we can pay him more than he would get at a FCS school (he's already been a HC twice-over, so it may not be as big a motivating factor as some people think) but it would likely be less than what we would shell out for Stoops.

Having said this, I would greatly prefer Stoops, even if we have to pony up some more cash. He would be worth it, even in a rebuilding year, for the recruiting opportunities alone.

Marvin Sanders is now cured and forgiven for his misdoings. Why not?

:dunno

I'm at a loss here--I never got a straight answer as to Marvin's transgressions, so I only assumed (and apparently assumed wrong).

Can you provide sauce or throw us a bone?

I never got the straight scoop on why Marvin left. I had heard of gambling issues and being unfaithfull to his wife, but nothing from a solid source.

I really hope Bo goes out and gets an already established defensive coordinator. The "growing into the job" thing is already happening at far too many coaching positions on both the offense and defense. We need an established coach.

That being said, I don't see this happening. Bo will either give a position coach a raise or go out again and get one of his "high school" buddies.
