Alright, something I'm curious about. WIth how things wrapped up on signing day, how adept is the current staff at recruiting? Obviously, vote in poll for who your favorite is...

But I'd also be interested in ranking the current staff in reagrds to this question. Personally my list is as follows:

  1. John Papuchis-- Coach JP has shown time and time again ever since he's gotten here that he can keep us in the running for kids who'd otherwise slam the door shut on DONU right away until the bitter end. Heck, he's even reeled in a few. Most examples escape me, but I know he singlehandedly won over Ankrah from the oft-neglected state of Maryland a few years ago. I really hope the promotion to DC will not hamper his ability to use his talent on the trail but realisitically it has to, to some degree.
  2. Corey Raymond-- Might catch a little flack for this one, but he came right out and voiced his concern with our efforts after the bowl loss. That took some nuts, and after that he really got a lot of Louisiana guys and defensive backfield prospects to give us a look. I believe his inroads to the state of LA, NFL experience, and relative youth will serve us very VERY well very soon. I think he was pretty much responsible for getting our foot in the door, and then slamming it shut once we got inside, on the somehow overlooked Alonzo Moore. He's a good coach, a great recruiter, and we should do whatever we can to keep him around a long time (especially if he keeps it in his pants, Marvin  )
  3. John Garrison-- This may also come as a surprise, but he's a very energetic, enthusiastic young coach who definitely pulls his weight on the recruiting trail. What's more, he truly loves NU, having played here, and I feel that might spur him to try that much harder recruiting wise. He was JW's lead recruiter and did a fantastic job letting the scenario play out and eventually warding off the dogs from Notre Dame. He's a technician as a coach as well, which I really like (someone's gotta succeed Barney soon), and I think he's another excellent young coach that can really help us recruit.
  4. Tim Beck-- Beck was a really good recruiter when he was our RB coach. He has major inroads in Texas, specifically the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, from having been a HS coach down there. I remember he was the guy who reeled in Sexy Rexy... Can you even imagine the last 3 years without that kid? Unfortunately, as I think we'll see with coach JP, the transition to OC took away from his ability to recruit somewhat. But hey, he was still pivotal in keeping JW on board, explaining the direction his offense is going, and he can still be a real asset to us.
  5. Ron Brown-- Coach Brown and Kaz for me were pretty much a toss-up. Brown gets the nod since he's hauled in more recruits recently. He's pulled in 7 the last 3 years, whereas Kaz is credited by Rivals with five. Brown is an oustanding human being, and can close very well with anyone who has any type of faith. Even AA and he share a special bond, even though AA is Muslim. The prayer at the PSU game definitely helped increase Brown's visibility, for those who didn't know what type of guy he was. He did a lot of the legwork on Cross and Borque, when we decided we needed a bruiser. Got both in the position to visit, and eventually secured Cross for us. Parents absoultely love Brown, and recruits do as well. This is why I have him a notch above coach Kaz.
  6. RIck Kaczenski-- I think Rick is another enthusiastic young guy who will help us out quite a bit in the future. He already swayed Curry to be :bigredn: this year, and was always good for a handful of decent prospects coming onboard every year while at Iowa. Not great players star-wise, but solid guys, which will have to be what we build this program back up to respectability on. Obviously, you need a mix of a few big-time world beater recruits to win the big one, but honestly there's no way around it-- We're NU, we're not in a recruiting hotbed, and the majority of players that will form the foundation of our team will not be :star :star :star :star :star players. Just not enough to go around. But I digress-- Love that coach Kaz brings a FLA connection... that's one state we've sorely overlooked for a LONG time now... under both Cally and Bo. Want to make some inroads.
  7. Marrow-- It's kinda unfair to include Marrow on this list, as he's only a GA at this point. But he was solely responsible for Alexander's commitment, and probably helped with Williams last year in some capacity, as he coached at their school. He is working with the TE's (and OL?) at this point though. Look for him to be named a TE coach someday, as he has NFL experience playing it, and I'm excited to see what he can do recruiting once he's a paid position coach.
  8. FIsher, Cotton, Els-- None of these guys have wowed me to this point. Fisher did help with JW, and brought Taariq Allen over from his school (though it could be argued it was the other way around). Cotton likes to play Army Guys more than recruit or coach, and we put him in charge of in-state kids to lessen the risk of him possibly screwing up their recruitment. Gotta give him a big head start. He only recruits his own position (OL) as well, though that is true in a good number of cases. Els has done literally nothing, and hopefully he can be very organized and push papers well as a recruiting coordinator, because at this point I don't know that I'd want to send him into a recruits home with the deal on the line.

I didn't include Bo in this list, as he tends to recruit wherever is needed and seal the deal, as opposed to getting our foot in the door and doing the grunt work on the trail. Having said that though, the straight shooter approach he takes with recruits (and the rest of our staff has adapted) seems to be wildly popular with a lot of recruits. Obviously, some (a lot of the higher rated guys) want to be catered to and told how much their needed from their sutior schools, but Bo doesn't go for that crap. Now, we'll whiff on some guys for exactly that reason. But on the other hand, a lot of kids (namely, recent signees) love his approach and we're building a specific type of team here, filled with a lot of guys that tick a certain way. They know what they're getting into, and I think it bodes well for us in the future. Bo himself is an excellent closer, and we're lucky to have him-- "We're lazy recruiting and need to start caring about it" believers be damned! When we need to seal the deal with a recruit, I wouldn't want to anybody but Bo in the living room.

Interested to see how you all feel as well. Any ideas for prospective additions to the staff that could benefit our recruiting efforts??

Hell of a job..........

I chose Pelini because as the head coach you have to be the closer.

Since this tread was started around NSD 2012, I thought it might be interesting to see who each guy "got" for the 2013 class. 247 lists a primary and secondary so I listed both if there were two. Obviously geography and what position we took more of make a difference but it might be interesting to watch over a few years.

Barney Cotton - Josh Banderas, Cethan Carter, AJ Natter, Dwayne Johnson, Greg Hart, Nathan Gerry, Matt Finnin

John Garrison - David Knevel, Zach Hannon, Dwayne Johnson, Maliek Collins, Chongo Kondolo, Matt Finnin

Rick Kaczenski - Randy Gregory, Adam Taylor, Ernest Suttles, Maliek Collins, Kevin Maurice

John Papuchis - Courtney Love, AJ Natter, Greg Hart, Kevin Gladney, Kevin Maurice, Gabriel Miller

Terry Joseph - Cethan Carter, DJ Singleton, Nathan Gerry, Boaz Joseph

Rich Fisher - Terrell Newby, Chongo Kondolo, Kevin Gladney

Ross Els - Josh Banderas, Courtney Love, DJ Singleton

Ron Brown - Terrell Newby, Adam Taylor

Tim Beck - David Knevel, Johnny Stanton

Bo Pelini - Drake Martinez

Bill Callahan - None

I'm just really glad we have Ron Brown on staff.

He's a bit of an enigma as far as college position coaches go - don't know of anyone else in the country like him. He's such a valuable addition, though, not only because he's a damn good coach (which he is), but because it's a near 100% lock that if a high school kid has us in his top few and the kid is passionate about Jesus, he's coming to Nebraska. We owe a huge debt to Coach Brown for the addition of players like Imani, Johnny Stanton, Adam Taylor and others. Even those he isn't in charge of recruiting he has a big impact with.

Of all of the wrong things that went down during the Callahan regime, canning Ron Brown was at the top for me. How could BC not recognize the incredible asset that he had in Ron Brown? Then again, I guess he didn't retain Bo as his DC either...

Coach Brown was more active during Aaron Green's process than he had been for years. That one awoke a sleeping giant.
