reviews of UNL-true or untrue....

Recommended Posts

so im taking a class to get credit to get bumped up the pay scale... was reading reviews on a college site at different schools... some are pretty fun... finally came across nebraska....... kinda what i expected but students who go there or have recently do you find them accurate??

i know lots of these kids who write these things are sometimes bitter or have a axe to grind but some im sure genuinely have complaints.. posted some of them below......

As many of the comments I have read have mentioned that the only thing to do at UNL is drink and watch football. This is extremely accurate. When I first got to college I became an acoholic because that was the only social activity available in Lincoln. Many try to pass off the atmosphere at UNL as friendly but as many that go here know professors, administrators, and staff are extremely arrogant and rude. A majority of people (including students) at UNL have no common courtesy or common sense. I recently was charged $25 for turning in a study room 5 minutes late in the summer when there was no one else using the other study rooms. When I tried to talk to the librarians about how rediculous this fine was they became very rude and talked down their noses at me. Many of the professors treat students in much the same way. If you do not immediatly understand the material they trat you as if you are stupid. I met a grad student that teaches here and she told me that they are told that 70% of their time at work needs to be spent on research and only 30% spent teaching. She also recently got in trouble for being to easy on her students when about 80% of her students got a grade of B or better. She was told that there should not be over 50% of her students with a grade of C or better. You are not taught in an effective manor when at UNL. A large majority of the curriculum is memorization and regurgitation so a student doesn't truely learn the material. This would be a great school to go to for grad students because of the leading edge research that goes on here. But undergrads are just a number and their education isn't important to this undiversity. You pay way too much money for what you get out of the education here. There is not enough student houseing. Just this last year 150-200 freshman students were put in temporary housing, which consisted of a few makeshift walls and painting over many large windows to give these students a small amount of privacy. When living on campus housing you are treated like a child and your every move is watched. The rooms are very small and, again, you pay too much to live on campus. The food on compus is dismal and there is no variety in choices. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have gone to UNL. Unfortunatly I only have to semesters left until I graduate and then I plan on attending grad school, SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! Overall I'd have to give UNL a grade of D-

Upgrading computers system almost every year. :) However, most of the students do not require to have such high performance system, I think this is a waste. It's ok if students REALLY need it.

International students: Always leave this Uni as your last choice. The tuition fees is raised about 15% every year. THAT's TOO MUCH, MAN!! NOwday, this Uni is facing serious budget cut from the State every year. Thus, this Uni tend to charge student every possible way in order to keep this running in such "high tech" Uni which I think that's unneccessary. We are here for education, not enjoying those high tech stuff except for research purposes. CONCLUSION: The "VALUE OF EDUCATION" is NOT worth for the amount money that we paid for.

This college is a joke! I came here from freaking China so that I could branch out and be challenged. But I was disappointed because this college has no challenges, no social life, no diversity, and nothing special what so ever. I thought that maybe I'd be entitled to some upper level classes because I scored so well on my ACT, but all the classes are the same level; STUPID. I'm majoring in English, and being from another country, you'd think that I'd be a little behind, but I have better English than half the people in this place. All the people at this school care about is their puppies, their farms and graduating to harvest corn. So freaking dumb. Pick any college but this one unless you want to be surrounded by a bunch of boring, slurred, farm-folk with nothing but pulling carrots out of the ground to look forward to

Being an out of state student, I really didn't think UNL was worth the price of admission. The campus is pretty clean and all, but outside of football there is little to do and not many opportunities. That's all students can talk about, so if you aren't a fan of the team or the sport, you feel stuck because they don't stop talking about it even in the off-season. The students are fairly nice, but pretty closed-minded with their only really cares football and alcohol. Lincoln is a decent college town, but gets pretty boring. About the only other decent place within driving distance is Omaha, which is about the same as Lincoln but a tad bigger and a few more bars and restaurants. Outside of that, nothing but corn fields and farms for as far as the eye can see. Classes weren't anything groundbreaking or overly challenging. Professors seem helpful while at the same time reminding you how great they think they are. It's just not my favorite place. I'm looking at Colorado or Arizona as where I'll transfer to. If I'm going to pay a huge amount of money, I want more to do than drink and watch football.

There are some grains of truth but the main thing that I take away from those reviews is that they should have devoted a bit more time to reading and writing.

You get out of UNL what you put into UNL. It doesn't look like they put much in . . . or perhaps they brought little to the table.

Clubbed the baby seal on the head with that one. All schools have their detractors and while I haven't been to UNL I can't imagine its as bad as comments might describe. Think about it...if you really like something or are just indifferent to it you're not likely to feel the need to write a review but if you're in the minority that hated it you're more likely to use any method to slam that experience you can find so you're likely to see more posts bashing something than ones supporting it. Internet comments suck because of this...

The fact that these people think Lincoln is only about drinking and football shows you how adaptive they are to their environment (here's a hint...not very).

If you come to Lincoln, Neb., looking for the greatest city in the world with hundreds of things to do, then you clearly know absolutely nothing. You get out of it what you put into it.

As far as the teacher and class complaints go, it depends. I think UNL's business college is terribly run/organized, but the journalism college is great and the broadcasting program ranked number one in the country last year.

Thanks for saying that in a nicer way then I was going to. Couldn't think of a nice way to say this thread is ridiculous.

Were the comments from other colleges similar?

  • Land grant school wanting profs to concentrate on research
  • Public Universities having budgets slashed
  • College kids drinking
  • Some profs have big egos
  • Out of state tuition is expensive

What you get out of any college depends on what you put in it. And I went there in the '70s

You'll find some students who just don't fit in at any school. But I had a blast during my time there. Didn't really experience any of the problems mentioned above. (Perhaps I was too busy drinking and going to football games to notice?) But I knew people who complained all the time, didn't fit in, and eventually ended up flunking out or transferring. I suspect it's that type of student who voices their displeasure like the comments above. To each his own, I guess.

56 percent would come back to lincoln...ive seen pitiful results too

there are more positive than negative comments also... some below.. but i dont buy the stuff that its someone elses fault if they find the school crummy... people are individuals and can have their opinions about something... perhaps it was the wrong fit or whatever.....

Overall UNL is a great school and Lincoln is a definite college town. Campus is right next to downtown and the haymarket so tons of eating/drinking/shops are walking distance. Beautiful campus when it's not covered in snow. Friendly people, students aren't very diverse since many are from the midwest but it creates a close-knit student body. Big greek school! Many greeks are also very involved on campus and hold positions in extracurricular activities. There is a big divide between greeks and non-greeks. The entire state of Nebraska worships Nebraska football, treat the players like celebrities...it's the only type of entertainment that has a solid history and success in Nebraska. Party animals. Many wild parties, tons of bars on O street, crazy football game days.

I would say a lot of professors are high on themselves, but at least most of them have a reason to be. While not all are necessarily the best instructors, they are all highly intelligent and very successful outside of their teaching. Advisors suck, take the time yourself to look into classes to fill your generals..there's TONS of options but advisors will basically place you in whatever.I am in the Fine Arts college which has a strong program. You take visual lit before your art classes...VERY VERY intense, but solid program that makes you a much better artist. The art college is small, I'm close with my professors and my education has surpassed my expectations. IF you want to pursue art I definitely recommend UNL, HOWEVER... if you are wanting to emphasize in graphic design I highly, highly, highly encourage you to go elsewhere. The program and professors are horrible, I have wasted soo much money on that program! Bad structure, no good feedback on your work, lazy professors...they hardly even teach. 95% of the design students feel this way, there are people pushing towards change but who knows when it will turn around. The only reason I am not completely bitter about coming to UNL is due to the rest of my positive experience. The rest of the art department has made up for the mess of graphic design courses. Also, outside of classes I enjoy everything about UNL.

I LOVE this school. The atmosphere is awesome, def has that midwestern feel. I would not go anywhere else. The school is very focused on the students. Facilities are either new or recently remodeled or in the process of beign remodeled. Resources are bountiful, campus is not spread out like other schools, you can walk anywhere within ten minutes. The dining halls even cook Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for students, oh and for dead week they do all kids of things for you. Free stress relief things like massages, video game tournaments, treats like donuts and candy. Also, the fan base from students is awesome. Alot of diversity in the student group, lots of people from all over the country as well as people from many different countries.

Nebraska is an excellent place to go to if you're willing to put the time into everything you do. The city of Lincoln itself isn't stellar, but if you are involved in campus organizations and make an effort to get to know your professors and grad students, you will receive the individual attention you desire. A big school like this gives you what you put into it, and those who leave with a negative attitude of the school are those who did not try hard enough to better the own success and experience.

Good point...you hear these things about many other schools.

1. Not much to do (well yes, that's what makes many college towns COLLEGEtowns)

2. All they do is drink (see 1), common at all schools.

3. The people were mean to me (mean people are everywhere)

4. They like football (welcome to America)

I've attended four Universities. Two universities I received degrees and two I went to for continuing education classes and to receive credit for add on certifications. In my experience at the University level, I put UNL at the bottom. I differ from from the above comments in that getting my student football tickets was the only reason I kept going but I agree with them about the horrible advisors. I had an advisor that was really mean, manipulative, and seem to enjoy causing student anxiety by canceling appointments with no notice, telling students to enroll in certain classes and then changing his mind and insisting he didn't tell them that, and making fun of his advisee students in front of an entire class. He would say things like "this one guy in my 802 class was really stupid, he xyz.........." I really didn't have but one or two minor disagreements with him as my advisor, but one almost cost me an entire semester. Every year or two I look him up at UNL to see if he still has a job, and he's still there. I also had one wonderful professor, but I had more that I would consider slightly below average then above average. After attending other classes at other Unis, I have to say that the program I completed at UNL was disjointed and unfulfilling. Except for the football of course.

It's funny that people mention the computers because that kid knows nothing of what he's talking about. With Academic freedom (read bullshite excuse to surf porn or whatever you want) you have to reload these machines every year at the very least. These aren't new computers, they are recycled throughout the school and though the machines may be different, they probably are not new or even the latest and greatest. I worked in the Academic sector as a systems admin and I can promise you that those PC's probably get reloaded every semester as we did due to the garbage put on those machines.

As others are saying, you get what you make out of it. Apparently these kids had something to gripe about.

Out of the thousands of students a small handful were unhappy and decided to write a scathing review. Who woulda thought not everybody would love UNL? I can't imagine a few online reviews, either good or bad, mean much of anything in the big picture. These only indicate the experiences of a small handful of people who were disgruntled enough to want to inflict some damage. You'll find that anywhere.
