Because "best" is entirely subjective. He is also the one that got beat for that 80-yarder against NW (And yes, Stafford dropped the ball on that one as well). Only the coaches get to watch people make mistakes in practice all week so they play the ones they think will be handling their assignments correctly come gameday. The tackling issues got the coaches second-guessing about Whaley and his lack of speed against spread teams made the coaches roll the dice with the youngster. It is great that he is playing very well so far but we are also not playing teams with a balanced offense. That makes reading offenses WAY easier.

When you have an athletic guy who knows the defense you get Lavonte David. When you have an athletic guy who is guessing then you have a liability.

I think David was guessing a lot his junior year. Being JUCO he did however have a ton more experience than Santos. But it sure is nice to see the kid finally out there. He wouldn't have made any difference against Ohio State anyway - so unless he was playing from week 1, then it makes no difference. He'll help us win out from here and we'll have a much better feeling about our linebackers going into next year than we were planning on having.

But doesn't this beg the question many people have been asking all year. Why aren't the best players playing? If he is good enough to get an award as soon as he gets a chance, why the hell wasn't he playing earlier this year and how many other players that have this kind of potential are sitting?

A lot are sitting out due to redshirt and/or injury. We have the players, but not many you can throw into the game and expect greatness. Santos had all last year to get ready on the practice field.

He has. He got significant time against Arkansas State and Northwestern. I think he's essentially starting at this point.
