Clippers Owner Racist Remark Allegations

The last thing that I'm going to do is give this guy a character reference, HOWEVER........doesn't it bother anyone else that a recording of a private conversation without an individual's consent (and illegal in CA) is being used as evidence to financially punish and harm the party on the recording? If allowed to stand, it essentially states that privacy ceases to exist. This man wasn't breaking any laws and is allowed his own personal opinions, however socially unacceptable and reprehensible they may be.

In my view, the person who made the illegal recording has put themselves in a position for a lawsuit for being responsible for lost revenue and a host of other damages. I wouldn't want to be her. Had she obtained permission to record, it would be an entirely different matter. If they are successful, I think that this puts the NBA on a slippery slope. Where does one draw the line?

Imagine if your spouse, son or daughter secretly and illegally recorded something that you had the right to say in private and then played it for your employer who summarily dismissed you for having an unpopular view. I'd guess that many might have a different opinion on this matter.

Yes, he is a victim. Just not a sympathetic one.

Someone had to record the owner's conversation. Whether it was the GF or Magic Johnson, the NBA or TMZ there will be hell to pay whenever that info sees the light. I wouldn't want to be in the chick's shoes if she did the recording and brokered the tape. She might suddenly disappear from the face of the earth. This little power play isn't over and don't be surprised if the rich old bastard pulls an ace out of his hat. A billion dollars will buy a lot of smart lawyers.

I definitely do not come anywhere close to agreeing with this outright, but it's worth a read regardless, I think:

Donald Sterling can say and think whatever he wants to say and think. Given his situation, I’m not particularly surprised that he says and thinks offensive things. In fact, his overall lifestyle is far more repugnant than his ludicrous statements about black people.

(*Note* this post originally identified his wife as his “ex-wife.” They are not divorced, I was mistaken. This man is publicly breaking his marriage vows, but still we find his discriminatory racial views to be the most offensive thing about him.)

We permit and even celebrate most forms of evil and debauchery in our society, so our Moral Outrage energy is stored, ready to be unleashed anytime an old white guy utters something untoward about minorities. Having removed sins like baby-killing, pornography, sex-trafficking, and infidelity from the ‘Things to Get Upset About’ column, this seems to be among the only universally-recognized evils remaining.

I like how baby killing is in the same sentence as pornography. Or how he describes Sterling's comments as 'inane' -- lacking in significance?

A wealthy, morally bankrupt adulterer in Los Angeles professed some unsavory views, behind closed doors, to his manipulative morally bankrupt girlfriend.

If that's all it was, it wouldn't be nearly the story that it is. He's not just some wealthy guy, though, he's the owner of a major professional sports franchise that millions of people support and follow closely.

Frankly, I didn't think this meandering, incoherent ramble was close to being worth reading.

Who said that quote Zoogies? It's a great summary of the situation.

He's going to be the winner in all this when he sells the team for a like a billion dollars.

Not to mention the fact that he'll never have to sit through another NBA game.

Meh, capital gains tax. He bought the Clippers for $12.5 million in 1981. If he sold for a billion that tax is going to probably be in the neighborhood of $300 million. Then whatever he gets to keep will be taxed when he dies and someone inherits all that money. If he still owned the Clippers when he dies his family would avoid that whole mess.

Actually capital gains tax in California is 33%. If he dies with that money in the bank (which I doubt he does) there goes another 40% for the inheritence tax. You may see it as gaining money, I just see it as losing money. If you had something worth $100 and you make $5 off of it every week would you sell it to me for $40?

That is inheritence, not him individually. I don't care what the numbers are on his kids getting this money, but his considering he is the offender. He still gets a lot of money for his remarks.
