Among the Power 5 programs, maybe it’s tougher to win big at Purdue. Maybe it’s hard to take a smallish private school like Duke or Vanderbilt and do things at a high level. But when it comes to history, recruiting, and general interest in the sport, it’s just hard to come up with a winner at Indiana.

 

But Kevin Wilson has done a terrific job of creating a factory for entertaining offenses. When the pieces are there and healthy, the results can be terrific with attacks that can hang with just about anyone.

SBNation: Defense Will Define Indiana Moving Forward

 

It feels different when you don't know if you're going to get another shot.

 

Indiana's 2015 season was, by Indiana's historical standards, a rousing success. The Hoosiers bowled for just the second time in 22 years and the 10th time ever. That alone made it somewhat special. They ranked in the S&P+ top 60 for the second time in three years, and unlike the other strong performance (2013), this one included a sixth win. As part of a long rebuild, that's unquestionably a good thing.

 

But there was probably more than a twinge of regret involved, too.

 

2016 projected wins: 6.0

Projected S&P+ ranking: 56 (10 in Big Ten)

5-year recruiting ranking: 55 (11 in Big Ten)

Biggest strength: IU is again loaded with skill guys like RB Devine Redding and receivers Simmie Cobbs Jr. and Ricky Jones.

Biggest question mark: Will the defense ever improve? It hasn't yet under head coach Kevin Wilson.

Biggest 2016 game: Nebraska (Oct. 15). IU will likely be coming off of losses to Michigan State and Ohio State, and this game could spur either a second-half charge or another losing streak.

 

Summary:

Wilson has continued to prove he is one of the brightest offensive minds in college football, and his Hoosier offense should be fine again in 2016. But can a new defensive coordinator find the spark to move the defense forward?

They took Michigan to 2 overtimes last year (they lost by 7 points) and played Ohio State tough losing that one by a touchdown and like us they also lost to Iowa by 8 points. They also had the exact same overall record as we did last year at 6-7. Yes they have a team.

Well, we get them after a bye, mid-season, and before Purdue, so they should have our full attention. Also less chance of greenness or injuries being a factor.

Interesting fact: IU uses the crowd, aerial shots from the OSU-IU game for their promo & marketing pics. Only time their stadium is at capacity & full of red. I assume the Nebraska game might be another opportunity as well.

They can be a good team at times and I like what Wilson is doing. Just not of talent flocks to Bloomington.

Replacing a multi-year starter in Sudfeld, who was a drafted QB and a 60% career passer. They have been horrible against the run and were worse than us in pass coverage. They'll also be coming off of a game at OSU.

 

Bloomington is a great college town though.
