2016 Game 9 “Expert” Picks: Nebraska at Ohio State (-17)

No matter how this game shakes out, this could still be a preview of the Big Ten Championship – but it’s more likely to happen if Nebraska loses.

The Huskers are coming off a loss to Wisconsin, but they’re in even with a loss in Columbus, as long as they win out and the Badgers lose again.

Ohio State’s season is effectively over, though, if it loses.

It’s been panic time in Columbus after the close call against Wisconsin, the fourth quarter collapse against Penn State, and the sluggish win over Northwestern, but 1) the Badgers are fantastic, and there’s no dogging a win in Camp Randall, 2) the Buckeyes had a bad ten minutes against the Nittany Lions where they flat gagged, and 3) the Wildcats are better than you think.

So while this isn’t the Ohio State crushing and killing machine it was over the first month of the season, it’s still very, very good, and the defense is still getting the job done overall.

The Buckeyes are still amazing at stopping opposing passing games, and the turnover margin continues to be terrific, going a +10 on the year and only losing the battle once – in a 58-0 win over Rutgers.

But there is a real, live concern on the offensive front that’s not generating a big-time push. The ground attack is still working – no one’s stopping it cold – but it’s not dominating, and the downfield passing game isn’t able to blow games open.

Basically, Ohio State is playing very Nebraska-like over the last month.

The Huskers are fine. They aren’t sensational, they don’t do anything that keeps coaches up at night, and they aren’t going to come out and hang 45 on the board, but they’re good, sound, and tough.

They don’t make a slew of big mistakes, they play great defense – especially against the pass – and they’re able to keep games tight, for good and for bad. The Huskers tend to play up and down to their competition, but now it’s time to come up with a big, giant win to jumpstart the national interest.

Husker QB Tommy Armstrong has been way too erratic, failing to hit 40% of his passes against Indiana and Wisconsin in the last three games, with two scores and five picks at the wrong time. He has to be fantastic, and he has to be the star – Nebraska can’t win if Armstrong isn’t the story.

But he can’t get the offense to control the clock and the game like he’ll need to. Ohio State might not be sensational this week, and there won’t be anything that happens that gets everyone excited about a national title possibility, but the offense will own the time of possession in a tough, methodical game that’ll win the war of running game attrition.

What do asterisks denote?

Picked to win, but not cover the spread

got it thank you.

If we could pull out the upset this would be the biggest husker win since?

This win would be bigger than last year vs MSU, simply due to it being more meaningful for our season, however that was a big win.

We beat a #9 MSU in 2011 that was a big game, followed by a #12 Penn State. Unfortunately we got blown out by Michigan that year.

In 2010, we beat a #7 Missouri.

I think otherwise, you have to go all the way back to 2001, beating a #2 Oklahoma.
