How did Washington do it? (Comparison between NU and UW)

Recommended Posts

I looked at the recruiting classes the past 5 years of Neb and Wash. Washington performs no better than NU in terms of recruiting, and NU is consistently a little better every year (NU hovering at about 25ish, Wash. at about 30ish).

Their state produces more talent, but not by much, and the closest prospect factory is Cali, which isn't very close. NU has Mich, Illi., Ohio, and Tex. all within the same relative distance as Wash. is to Los Angeles (and to a lesser extent, the bay area).

It must be coaching and development. Wash. seems to have been able to develop the talent they got in a BIG way; I like Riley; but he and his staff never really showed they could develop the talent that they could get their hands on. (Or St. never was able to get top tier classes, but it wasn't horrible, either). Wanna see if Riley and co. can somehow find a way to improve both lines; as Wash. seems to have done.

Just wanna see what all of your thoughts are on the development of our own guys and how we fair compared to programs like Wash, or even Wisc., Iowa, and other good programs not in recruiting hotbeds.

Chris Petersen would never and will never coach at Nebraska.

These questions are fine, but the answers are generally idiotic because they lack any kind of nuance. Washington isn't a recruiting hotbed, in the sense that California/Florida/Texas are, but do we really think that Lincoln, NE and Seattle, WA are on near-equal footing when it comes to ease of success?

You are spot on Red Payne and I have pointed this out in other forums. Half of the war is to win the recruiting battle, while the other half is to do the most with the talent you have. Petersen inherited less talent than NU has had (on paper according to all the recruiting services) yet he had his team playing with great chemistry and technique in all phases of the game. This goes back to some coaches simply being proven winners that know how to maximize their team's performance in any situation. He did this at Boise as well, and there is no question that Oklahoma had way more talent than Boise St. did in the Fiesta Bowl, but he found a way to get his players to win that game. Riley was sold as a guy that could not only recruit but also get 4-star performance out of 2-star talent. I do think he's making some slight inroads in recruiting, but I have yet to see great player development under his watch.

For one thing they had an actual quarterback this year....when was the last time Nebraska had a real qb

That is a good point. NU has gone 8 straight years with a QB that does not know how to throw (TM and TA). Armstrong ranked 110th in the nation in QB accuracy this past season, so we should see some significant improvement whether its Lee or O'Brien.

I don't think he would've come here… But there are some rumors that he was lined up to possibly come here but a few of the regions and /or boosters blocked it becuase they didn't want Bo gone

The nice thing about college football is one or two guys can make a big difference. Our line is sure to suck again next year but if Lee is decent that could really help.

It's easier to pretend "hot names" wouldn't consider us.

UW has had some freak defenders over the last couple years. 3-4 first rounders in the past couple of drafts. Those 1-2 difference makers helped take them from a crappy defense, to an OK defense, to a real good defense this year. They have hit home runs with 5-6 kids who are graduating or seniors to be. Victor, Vita Vea, Budda Baker, Qualls, Sidney King. King and Baker are undeclassmen who could go first round. If they lose those two, or more, it'll be interesting to see if they are good enough to reload or are only one hit wonders.

Sucks seeing Qualls be so dominant, a battle we were in and lost out on.

They also added an elite QB who has improved over his true freshman to sophomore year. They are just missing a true legit OL to beat the best.

the guy had 6 losses in 2015 and 6 losses in 2014 - "he sucks - what a joke"

oh wait he had 1 loss in 2016 - Come to NU

Are we really going to say that he is that good? Let's see what his 3 year record is after MR gets his 3rd year. Because if you compare first 2 years MR looks equal or 1 game better.

I agree that we need to see if Riley can get NU in the CFP next year to do an apples to apples comparison, but Petersen has a better consistent track record of success at Boise St than Riley has had any place he has been. Are you predicting that NU ends up in the CFP next year? I sure hope so.

Are you talking about Petersen?

If so, are you unfamiliar with why he would be desirable?
