Healthcare Reform

It’s like everything else. He does a great job of complaining about something and creating outrage about the current situation. He forces the issue of getting us out of what he doesn’t like.....but doesn’t have anything better to replace it with and we end up worse off.

Nafta

north Korea

iran

environmental agreement

health care

the list keeps growing.

Speaking of NAFTA we just had a small presentation of how the USMCA would impact our customs teams. It's not pretty. It basically adds 4 additional layers, that like 10 times as much work for auto manufacturers. Verifying the manufacturing location of components, the pay of the employees who made those components at a supplier, the source of the material... upping the requirement for the percentage of the vehicle components made in the region from I think 62% to 75%. It's a little nuts.

Granted a lot of it is good for the region, but for the party that complains about over regulations they sure are adding a lot of new regulations...

I've got an idea for a solution - let's make sure people can totally opt out of health care, or better yet, tell them they can have it, they can have pre-existing conditions, they can keep their doctor etc - that it's the best healthcare they could ever have because "nobody cares more about healthcare than me" and then on the back end, blow it up and take what little folks have away from them.  More personal loans to pay for care?  Meh, not my problem.

So....they are at least smart enough to realize that putting out a healthcare bill that sucks in the middle of a Presidential campaign would be a bad thing for them.

Haven't you heard? The word "smart" has a restraining order against Trump. They're not allowed to be within 1,000 yards of one another :D

He won't be able to not talk about it for 2 years.  I just hope the Dems can get their $hit together and coordinate a strong message to take advantage of the very real threat.  It was a big part of the midterm wins.

At every town hall and every debate the Dem candidate in the general election of 2020 needs to remind voters that Donald Trump wants to eliminate the ACA. They cannot let voters forget.

But, they damn well better not act like everything is wonderful with it.

It needs fixed.  If they act like it's the greatest thing ever......they are missing the point.

Yeah, I wouldn't clamor that they want to get rid of the ACA, but instead that their proposals to replace it were worse than what we already have

For all the correct discussions about how it needs improved, I feel like we overlook the fact this administration is hatcheting every single aspect of it they legally can to try to sabotage it.

It's not perfect, but it's what was politically possible ten years ago. Bu we discount how much blame lies with the Trump administration for actively making it worse. I listened to an insightful radio piece this morning from a doctor who compared what our healthcare premiums would be like today with no ACA vs. the ACA with support from the government vs. a government unable to repeal the ACA but doing everything it can to undermine it. The results:

See the entire thread for more detail, but the TL;DR version: The ACA did make things slightly more expensive versus if we had never passed it, but it also implemented a ton of quality standards for what healthcare we can receive. But that dark blue chunk represents the malice and contempt of the GOP wrecking healthcare law they didn't like, and inflated costs much more than the passage of the law itself.

That's not good enough.  The Dems need to talk about that it's a first attempt to fix the healthcare system.  BUT, they need to flat out acknowledge that it still has major issues that need addressed and talk about how they are going to address them.

Yep.  This administration is going to do everything they can to sabotage whatever good the ACA is actually doing.

What a totally F'ed up situation we find ourselves in.

Most everyone I heard discussing healthcare during the midterms was quick to say it wasn't perfect but it was the start of what needed to be done.  I don't think I'd get hung up on what you think they might do wrong.

Ummm...they lost the last election to Donald Friggen Trump.  I'm going to be very "hung up" on what people are doing to kick him out of office till it's done.

Agree. But the fact remains that the ACA is a viable option for people without healthcare. It's nowhere near "affordable" but as mentioned, it's slightly less than the "benefit" my wife receives as a full time employee at her midsize company. Its existence is not a threat to the country, as the previous system was crippling businesses and individuals already.

The ACA needs a bigger buy-in in order to work its economies of scale, and these were largely thwarted on a state level by Republican governors, and on the federal level by the always vindictive Trump administration. It's not a huge fix, but it requires more cooperation. Car insurance has worked these actuarial sciences forever, and for some reason it hasn't been accused of socialism.

Speaking of which.....Obama actually stole the ACA from an old Republican blueprint. Since the Nixon administration, it's been the conservative alternative to truly socialized medicine.

And if you gut Obamacare....well a fast growing majority of Americans think Medicare For All might be the better idea.

Careful what you wish for, healthcare haters.
