Roster Outlook for The 2019-2020 Season

Recommended Posts

We are now almost complete with our roster and it is a completely revamped team. As we get new players I will add them but so far here is our roster and potential additions for 2019. Nebraska is allowed 13 scholarship players in total. I probably missed some transfers but I am only adding them if they visited or have some connection with the staff (Lard I think).

Update: This staff is recruiting at a high level. They have added some solid players to this roster. The main thing now is how will the roster gel for the 2019 season. Justin Costello has left the team according to Washut so I removed him.

On Roster

Dachon Burke

Thor

Isaiah Roby (Almost certainly going pro)

Jace Piatowski(Walk-on)

Charlie Easley(Walk-On)

2 scholarships

Recruits signed

Jervay Green

Akol Arop

Cam Mack

Yvan Ouedraogo

Kevin Cross

Samari Curtis

6 scholarships

Grad Transfers/Transfers Committed/Signed

Haanif Cheatham(Grad)

Matej Kavas(Grad)

Dalano Banton(Transfer)

Shamiel Stevenson(Transfer)-applying for a waiver for immediate eligibility.

Derrick Walker(Transfer)

5 scholarships

Right now that leaves us with 0 available scholarships. If Roby wants to stay things could get interesting.

13 total scholarships.

Transfers/Grad Transfers-I will leave these names on here in case something happens but it looks like our roster is full at the moment.

Maurice Calloo(Transfer)- seems we want him to go Juco before we give him a spot.

Joel Ntambwe(Transfer)-visited for the Spring game. He could potentially apply for a waiver to play immediately

Good time for this!  I like Johnson, as he will give Heiman one more year before he becomes the starter.  I also prefer Mack over Cheatham.    And I do not expect Roby back, so we need a couple of guys in the 6' 8" - 6' 9" size.

On Roster

Amir Harris

Dachon Burke

Thor

Justin Costello (Walk on)

Isaiah Roby (Potentially going pro)

Karrington Davis

Johnny Trueblood (Has a chance to come back, but unlikely)

Brady Heiman

6 scholarships

Recruits signed

Jervay Green

Akol Arop

2 scholarships

Right now that leaves us with 4-5  available scholarships depending if Roby leaves.

High school/Juco Recruits-We probably take 1

Cam Mack

Mika Adams-Woods

Transfers/Grad Transfers- 3-4 I would assume two will sit and two will be grad transfers

Haanif Cheatham(Grad)

Matej Kavas(Grad)

Jayce Johnson(Grad) 7 footer-working on official

Maurice Calloo(Transfer)

Cam Lard(Transfer)- Possible connection with the staff? If not I can remove him.

Am intrigued by Costello. Miles didn't play him AT ALL during the last 1/2 dozen games even though the bench resembled a M*A*S*H unit. Meanwhile FH has him on the roster seemingly ahead of potentially Trueblood. ??

Also wondering if yesterday's rule allowing walk-ons to transfer immediately without having to sit a year may impact Jack Hoiberg from MSU?

The order of players I put was in random order. I really want Trueblood and Roby back, but I will understand if they both want to move on.

This roster needs some shooters and immediate help as soon as possible. I believe it makes sense to raid the transfer market-especially grad transfers because that will open up the roster for 2020 to get more transfers and high school players. We will for sure get two transfer players that have to sit and possibly three. But we need at minimum two grad transfers ready to go because we need bodies. A big man and a good shooter are what we need and all three of the grad transfers I have listed check those boxes.

Cam Mack is an electric playmaker and distributor which is what this offense needs. Right now we are at 8 scholarship players that leaves us with 5 remaining spots and we will also have to see if Roby goes through to the NBA or stays.

I totally agree with all of that, I was just intrigued by the fact that Costello played not at all for Miles at the end and yet Fred still has him on the roster. I wasn't saying one was listed ahead of the other.

I also totally understand we need transfers and we need them NOW  to build this roster, so walk-ons will be a very small  input to what we expect to see on the floor by November

I am impressed by the number of guys we are in on and are scheduling visits  for this quickly. Now we need signatures!

I really hope we can land this kid - trying to set up a visit

http://www.fiba.basketball/europe/u16/2018/player/Yvan-Camille-Sagalba-Ouedraogo

Seems to play hard and not shy from contact. That being said, he reminds a bit of Jordy at times in terms of foot work-- gets a little "shuffle-happy" and gauges space by shoving his shoulder in to guys. The tape I saw made me think there isnt a lot of height in the league he was in, so he would have to get use to playing against guys who are 6'9-7'0 where he is giving up a few inches. He seems to only shoot layups/or bunnies.

All of these things are me being hyper-critical and I assume the staff sees him as a project. I am a bit more apprehensive on guys who would take a schollie for 4 years but I dont pretend to be a great basketball mind.

So the positions break down something like this:

PG -

SG - Harris, Davis, Burke, Thor, Green, Cheatham

SF - Arop

PF - Roby (?)

C - Heiman

Hopefully Mack fills the PG spot but it's looking like a lot of four-guard, run and gun to me.

I'm sure we'll see some of that type of look.  But I was just going by what position they are currently listed at on the roster.

We will probably run 3 guards, anyway.  I was looking at last year's roster compared to the year and a few guy grew a little taller.  That's why I mentioned Davis.   Now we need mack & some big guys.

Looks to me like our best starting 5 right now are:

G Green

G Cheatham

G Burke

G Davis

C Hieman

I hope we get Mack and Johnson.  That would greatly improve this lineup.

We don't have to start Heiman just because he is tall

I agree, but I think Hoiberg & Co. will add 2 maybe 3 more to the 2019-20 team.  I like Davis & Hieman, but both need another year on the bench to help them develop.  I also think that our bench players will play 15 to 20 minutes a game.

We will need someone with some size to help defensively in the Big 10 and right now he is all we got and Roby is not coming back.  I also think we will add some other players to the team, as we have 5 schollies left:  3 for 2019-20 and 2 set-out transfers.

I was using people currently in the program or committed. Who else in that group are you going to replace him with?  Like SouthLincoln said.  We need someone with some height in the Big Ten in the middle.  You can't go with 5 guards.

Now, ultimately, I also agree with Southlincoln in that I don't think this is what our full roster will be come next season.  HOPEFULLY, he can bring in a transfer with some size (Johnson) to fill that roll.

Agree! I think Hoiberg will go with a 4 guard line-up.

Updated the OP, thank you! If we can get Mack, Johnson and a regular transfer or two(if Roby leaves) we will be in good shape.

Supposedly Johnny wants to come back but is being told no.

He went through senior night festivities last year, so that tells me he wasn't planning to come back to play even if Miles stayed.

We are pretty set at guard at the moment. I honestly dont think we need Trueblood back.

Now if Borchardt could get a waiver.....

I know the topic is the roster on the court, but I'm wondering if the  PBA will be adjusting it's  roster to include a Hoiberger? It should be served up-tempo without annoyingly long waits for any offensive action.

Probably enough servings for everyone, including the inevitable Hot Dogs adjoining the menu. Relish and mustard plays available as sides.

The drink is almost certainly Kool-Aid.

Thorir on scholly....I'm sorry but I was hoping he was going to look elsewhere. At this point if we get Roby back or can pick up a big man, we are better than last year already.

Wasn't Thor a 3 point expert before he got here?  Seems like maybe TM put the leash on and he lost his confidence - Maybe FH can bring out a specialty in him

You are correct!  He shoot 55% on a tournament.  Hard to believe as his form is really odd.

He's a lefty so everything looks off.  He seems to have a pretty high basketball IQ, but defensive foot speed seems to be an issue.

All righty, then.  Nearly complete roster turnover on deck.

This is good and needed although I would’ve been curious to see Heiman’s development

Do you think the mass exodus makes it less likely that Roby returns?

Heiman was never going to be a good enough athlete for Hoiberg's system.  Best case scenario, he might have turned into an Elliot Eliason who was at Minnesota.

I think Roby is about 98% gone already but losing everyone he knows here definitely would make returning more surprising than it already would be

Agreed...he doesn't fit what Fred does and honestly he doesn't really fit in the Big Ten for the most part.

Agreed...no pals left on the team makes it really hard to come back when he knows he can go play and get paid somewhere.

I think Tim felt compelled to recruit Heiman after Miles didn't recruit other Nebraska high school players in his early years.

So, if the tweet is true, we have the above.

Am I missing anyone?

So, right now we would have 3 bench players next year.

We need more players.
