The George Floyd/Black Lives Matter protests and police conduct

Recommended Posts

@Guy Chamberlinquote taken from your article.

Consider one of the most straightforward survey questions about race and racism. That question asked whether “our country has made the changes needed to give blacks equal rights with whites.” A surprising 92% of White American police officers endorsed this statement, suggesting that they believe racism is a thing of the past.  Only six percent of White police officers disagreed, acknowledging that there is still the need to combat racism (2% were unsure).  Among Black police officers, 69% acknowledged a lack of equal rights.  But among the White general public, 41% (still a minority, but a much larger one) acknowledged a lack of equal rights in America. Among the Black public, 84% said so.  It is hard to digest such findings and avoid the conclusion that, on average, police officers are even more racist than the rest of us.

This question has nothing to do with whether someone is actually racist, yet the last sentence is saying that depending on how one answered dictates whether they are racist or not.

one could answer the question by saying they believe our country has made changes needed to give blacks equal rights with whites.  That doesn’t make them a racist.  It means they believe our country gives equal rights to all now

@Archy1221 That exact same article has been posted here before, and just like before it fails to provide context.

From your article:

"In 2019, police shot and killed 1,003 people in the US, according to the Washington Post’s Fatal Force database. Of those, 250 were black and 405 white. Police shot and killed 55 unarmed suspects, including 25 whites and 14 blacks.

In 2018, police made 10,310,960arrests, according to the FBI, and the race was known for 5.6 million offenders. Of fhem, 1,548,690 (27.4%) were black."

So 25% of all police shootings involve a black person, and of those shootings that we're fatal 25% killed a black person. But black people make up less than 14% of the population.

Something is wrong...

Sure. Maybe the biggest factor in the resurgence of race in the public debate are the number of Americans who believe America already fixed the race problem. They are wrong. That's does't necessarily make them racist, but if they continue to hold onto that belief despite considerable evidence to the contrary, they are indeed racists.

btw...you have phrased this question through the lens of "equal rights."  So if you go by the book, you can point to the page that says equal rights. But that's not how it works on the streets, in the courts, or waiting for a table at Denny's, and that's the point.
