I'm guessing 90% of those tackles occured at least 3 yards downfield. Going off the Huskers.com play-by-play and dividing by quarters so there's not as many numbers to keep track of: Yards gained on plays where he was listed as a tackler: 1st - 3, 16, 3, 7, 3, 3, 2 = 7 plays for 37 yards, 5.2 ypp 2nd - 4, 31, 1, 3, 9 = 5 plays for 48 yards, 9.6 ypp 3rd - 19, 4, 8, 4, 2, 5, 5, 7 = 8 plays for 54 yards, 6.7 ypp 4th - 9, 8, 3, 6, 4, 5, 8, 6, 2, 10 = 10 plays for 61 yards, 6.1 ypp Total = 30 plays for 200 yards, 6.6 ypp Observations: The one TFL must have been the one that got reassigned after the fact so it is missing from the above list. The 16, 31 and 19 yard plays were obviously ones he just chased down. Throwing those out would be 27 plays for 134 yards or 4.9 ypp Only four of the plays listed were less than three yards (plus the one TFL). Three yards isn't a ton but the MIKE should be making a lot of tackles for short gains. We still gained pretty good yards (>3) on 20 of the 30 plays. He wasn't completely stuffing us. 13 tackles were after we had subbed out our starters. 1 1 1 Quote Link to comment

Mavric
Actually a really good defensive call here. OLB crashes down hard. Safety blitz behind it. CB rolls up to cover for the blitzing safety. Other Safety covers over-the-top. We whiffed with the blitzing Safety and still had two guys in position to make the stop. Quote Link to comment

Let's be clear about one thing. The only real measure of competition between teams last Saturday were SAT / ACT scores. On that count, Fordham players likely won by a country mile. The game itself will not even qualify as a footnote in either school's football history. Quote Link to comment

Watch it again. He fakes getting the ball, takes a little bump and just stops. Man…. You got RUN THROUGH the fake. You need to be getting tackled hard cuz they think you have the ball. Do it hard all the way. Alllll the way. Then, when you do get the ball, you’ll make the extra yds or break a big one cuz you are always running hard. Those little tiny details matter so much. Undone
@Mavric, that play right there is the kind of stuff I'm looking at with the claim that Stepp is the guy. Everybody would agree that with only having had two games to analyze four different backs that have previously never gotten a carry as a Husker, it's kind of hard to know what's what. But the way Stepp fights through that first tackle - that's what you want to see. Quote Link to comment

But he had five yards to get going before meeting the first defender and then another 5+ after breaking the tackle before getting to another one. I don't recall Ervin being provided with anything near that opportunity so far. Quote Link to comment

Maybe that's true and maybe it isn't. One would think that Ervin is outperforming the pack in practice, but this Buffalo game is sort of do or die for Frosty IMO. Better make sure to play the guys who you believe will show up the biggest in games so we don't lose this one. It'll be interesting to see who's out there on the first offensive drive.
