(Old story) Pelini: "You no longer have an offer from Nebraska."

Picked up this exchange between Sam McKewon and Sean Callahan about a former Husker recruit, Dominic Walker, who ended up going to Auburn and is now transferring to a JUCO.

Anybody know the story?

Remember him? RT @BMattAU: WR TRANSFERS | Dominic Walker transferring to a JUCO http://shar.es/1bIjOB

Sean Callahan @Sean_Callahan

@swmckewonOWH I remember when Pelini said "I'm going to make your decision real easy tomorrow. You no longer have an offer from Nebraska."

Basically he committed to Nebraska and was somewhat of a major pick up (ESPN 300 player). He kept saying he was going on visits for fun, not that he was seriously interested in the schools he was going too. If I remember correctly, he told the coaches that he would be visiting Auburn and the previous staff requested that he not visit the school.

Then, the above conversation happened. It's been awhile, so I could be a little off on the specifics. But that was essentially the jist of it.

His thread got interesting.

Even his mom was afraid for him when he made the call to head coach Bo Pelini and his staff on Friday.

"It was a very tough decision. They were [mad]. They were very mad. But I thought I had to call them like a real man should," Walker said. "But yeah, they were mad. Coach Pelini said, 'Best of luck, you're going to need it.' "
Wide receivers coach Rich Fisher also was in on the call.
"Coach Fisher said, 'I can’t believe you,' " Walker said. "It was really awkward."
He had prepared himself for the conversation but nothing really got him ready to face the music. But he did what he felt he had to do.
"At first I was scared to decommit because of what people might think about me since I decommitted from Vandy and then I'd be decommitting from Nebraska," Walker said. "But I just gotta do what I gotta do and not worry about what people have to say. It's my future."
Indeed it is and his future will be spent in Auburn, Ala., for the next four seasons, most likely.

The last line is somewhat ironic.

This shouldn't suprise anyone. This patented approach is now detailed in Bo's new book:

"Sour Grapes and Intimidation - How to deal with fans, bosses, recruits, the media, and everyone else that is out to get you"

By M.A. Pelini

I'm just glad we don't have to try and rationalize any of this crap anymore.

Walker gave the staff plenty of reasons to pull his offer. He conducted a secret visit with Auburn with Nebraska at his school.

While that may be true, I am more commenting on the general attitude and approach to recruiting and relating to recruits. Seems like a little intense and negative.

This is the same approach that people want Riley to take, if a kid won't fully commit ( Neal) pull his offer. But yet Bo does this to a kid and he gets killed....

You realize this is only "some" people. Also, I'd imagine Riley withdrawing a scholarship from a kid would go a little smoother. Probably a polite conversation where the two eventually come to a mutual decision to part ways, wishing each other luck in the future as the conversation ends.

I doubt the conversation would go as it is said to have gone with Bo and Fisher......

All together, its probably not so much the act of pulling the scholarship, but the way it was handled. A little bit ridiculous that two grown men would try to lay a guilt trip on a kid, then act like the spurned ex-girlfriend and just cut all ties.

Exactly. If it were up to some Jones, Neal, Snyder would all of had their offers pulled by now.

I don't understand why any kid would commit to a school until signing day anyway. Why limit yourself until you have visited all the possibilities out there? This is the next step to the future of the rest of your life, take everything in and make the decision the last week up to the signing day.
