huskerfan333157
Let's face it, Mattison was righ. You have to have a 4.0 GPA, top 10 in your class and an high act score in order to get accepted into Michigan. Neals only way to get into Michigan would be by a football scholarship and that's not saying Neal is dumb! A lot of smart people don't get accepted at UM. Regardless, I think neals dad misinterpreted how Mattison said it. 2 Quote Link to comment
Lyons in the Sea of Red.
Maybe mattison handed Neal a dunce cap and said "look boy, you're dumb, but we're gonna give you the best education money can buy if you come strap it up and go tackle some dem quarterbacks"... And Neals dad actually under-reacted? Quote Link to comment
StPaulHusker
I think the question should be why Mattison said it in the first place. Neal's GPA and ACT score had no bearing on the offer, so why tell a kid he wasn't good enough without football? 7 Quote Link to comment
huskerfan333157
I agree, stpaul. I stated that the difficulty of getting into Michigan shouldn't have been brought up in the first place. Still, I highly doubt Mattison told neal he wasn't smart. Quote Link to comment
huskerfan333157
By the way, can I edit my post from my phone? Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
I have no clue if he overreacted without being there and hearing the conversation first hand. Quote Link to comment

Blackdeuce
In 2010, the average gpa for admitted students was 3.8 (according to a U of M website). That means that there were probably some students with gpas of around 3.5 accepted. Maybe even lower for a few. I don't know. http://alumni.umich.edu/learning/college-admissions-faq I think I would be pissed if I told that I was only getting in because of football. Like someone else said, it kinda implies that they bend the rules for football players. It probably had a lot to do with the way that it was said. Anyway, their goof is to our benefit. I'm good with it. Quote Link to comment
huskerfan333157
Black, every major football program bends the rules for football players! 1 Quote Link to comment
Blackdeuce
Black, every major football program bends the rules for football players! Yeah, I'm sure that's true. On the U of M website, I found the requirements for transfer students. It mentioned a 3.0 to 4.0 and at least a B average. They even have a provision for home school students. I don't know why they would let a transfer student in with a 3.0, but not a freshman. Seems odd. Quote Link to comment
Apathy
I don't think Neal's dad overreacted one bit. If a coach from a high caliber football program such as Michigan came into my house and insult my son who has no acedemic issues with that statement, I going to react the same way. Neal wasn't having any acedemic problems so making that statement was the dumbest thing anybody could've said. Quote Link to comment
Stumpy1
I would be pissed...It was a slap in the face to Neal. Quote Link to comment
Redmusky
I take it Mattison never went to Michigan with his 4.GPA Quote Link to comment
Count 'Bility
I just laugh at the whole thing because Mattison was trying to flip a guy from a school that has by far-not even close-the most academic all-americans in both football and all sports. Of course academic and admission standards aside. Quote Link to comment
The Dude
I guess I'm not sure if I know all the details. What I heard is he "escorted Mattison from the property" - or something like that. If that's the long and short of it, I don't think he overreacted. Quote Link to comment
