husker nation at war with itself

I have a weird long story that solidifies my view on this from this weekend.

Long story short.

Went to game with brother in law discussed MR and BP and FS.

At one point a drunk fan immediately in front of us, tells us we aren't real fans and we should go sit with BYU fans, and we wont get a lost today that we wanted as Bo Supporters. (this was at the come back at the 3rd quarter, even though we were cheering and rooting for Nebraska as much as everyone else and wearing Husker gear...)

I attempt to defuse the situation by saying were both NU fans I am an alumni and my brother in law did not get the chance to go here because he was deployed and went elsewhere... I brought up the point I cheered for them even when I was in college during the Callahan era. I hate Callahan, but while he was here I supported him and always cheered for him and went to the games...

Anyway that seemed to defuse the awkward situation. It was however extremely awkward and hostile for this 'real' fan to turn around and tell us we weren't 'real' fans and we should go sit with BYU - i think that is what the 'real fan' attempted to say, to be honest it was so awkward I kind of just shut down...

Our conversation was about how Bo and FS firing and how that will effect us long term... Again nothing I am looking to debate here, just sharing that to give context. This was a conversation we were having between us prior to the game and somewhat throughout during breaks.

But the fact I cannot sit in Memorial stadium have a private conversation with my brother in law about NU without being heckled by someone is the type of crap you expect at Unv of Iowa or Unv of Michigan.

I am sorry but I have to LoL at this a bit. You can't have a private conversation in a stadium of 90k people? How terrible.

Here's the problem with articles like this one - they take a sampling of tweets and message board posts from the internet and turn that into evidence for a fanbase on the 'war'path.

What an utter load of rubbish. The vast majority of people are in agreement and still on Riley's side. And since Saturday's game, I've seen far more support for the program and HCMR than I have naysayers trying to lather their bodies in Essence of Bo Pelini war paint.

Not to mention, the vast majority of Husker fans DON'T post on message boards or stroke their egos on Twitter for the world to see.

Then how do you know what they think?...

And why now does any hint of doubt or skepticism in new staff automatically equate to "raging Pelini fan"?

But that's EXACTLY my point. The article even says fans are questioning some of Mike Riley's decisions in the game, and says they're arguments coming from "Bo-lievers." I'm sorry, is that in their Twitter handles? Is that in their username on Red Sea Scrolls? It's complete garbage. Does criticizing any decision Mike Riley makes automatically turn me into Pelini enthusiast? This is very much how the article comes off.

I don't know what the ENTIRE fan base thinks - however, the vast majority of people posting on Twitter and message boards, the same places this writer took data for his article, show a clear, positive number of people supporting the program, supporting Mike Riley and not stroking their Bo Pelini pocket rocket. Even this board mostly has people in agreement... only a small, small handful of people have said anything about wanting Pelini back.

It's exactly as JJHusker1 put it - a fringe group of maniacs are being used as foundation for an article. It'd be like me saying most of America is divided on just who The Beatles are but then using four years old as my data supply.

I think the problem is we all want to see a quality product on the field. We are tired of the mental breakdowns the number of penalties and the questional play calling. Third down and one and we can't get one yard ( Three Times in the forth quarter ) We expected to see fewer penalties and a solid game plan. I hope this happens this year.

When I say X to my brother n law next to me. Does not mean I want some drunk standing up pointing a finger into my chest explaining why I am moron. That is the type of crap makes me never want to come back again, and or call the cops next time.

Do not give me the crap of this is a stadium of X people, does not excuse borderline criminal activity.

Again not what I wanted to discuss. I wanted to discuss this whole its us v. them.

But guess you Riley fan boys wanted to change the narative.

Edit:

Heres the thing thought of not even sharing this because it hurts the brand.

But when I have some drunk threaten physical violence against me because I think FS should not of been fired... It really states where you band wagoners are... A cult. I will see you guys in 4 years, Its funny to me the one place I feel welcomed as a fan, after working 5+ years out of state to experience same crap, makes me feel like maybe im the moron.

Not to call you on the carpet but I can't imagine the people in front of you called you out unless they over heard some things that would make them think that. Pretty one sided, anecdotal story if ya ask me.

I sure as hell won't accuse you of not being a fan but also I have seen indications in some of your posts that you may not be behind the Riley hire 100%. And that's fine, you can have any opinion you want, but don't feign bewilderment when somebody over hears some of those types of comments (which they apparently did or they wouldnt have said sh#t) and takes issue with it.

BTW-Love your signature gif.

Here is the thing friend. When I am in the boxes. I am paying enough I dont care what your opinion is. As far as my previous opinions, yes I hate mike riley I have always supported that position. Every one will soon enough. Frank Solich Should still be head coach here. AS far as MR he is too old, too failed and crazy we gave him helm of a program like ours. As far as yours I had it coming, I was not group speaking. I am a soft speaker, was just speaking to my brother. Anyway theres no place like Nebraska, excpet Iowa Michigan or Mich State. It hurt.

But hey guess I am at fault for being assaulted being told to change seats, and being called out by a 'real fan' just for supporting idea Bo should not of been fired?

Sure its all me.

I am a troll...

I did not even want to share this story with anyone, because it hurts our fan base, and I did not want to hurt any friendships I have on the board not that I have many. Guess at end of day want to ban me. Ban me. It just struck a nerve with me after this Saturday I have attended a game everyyear sense 94' I have the stubs to prove it.

Generally speaking I have had nothing but positive relationships with the fans. I have several items signed by the entire team signed by fans that gave them to me, when I was in Dare.

Good Lord. If I would have heard you uttering anything nearly this hate filled and incoherent, I would have told you to stfu up, too. I think most sober and thoughtful fans would, too. I'm gonna take a wild guess you aren't as soft of a speaker as you think.

And dude, do you actually know why Frank Solich was fired?

If not, that's another excellent reason to keep your ill-formed opinions to yourself.

Hey, I don't know what happened in the stadium other than what you've shared here. Maybe the guy was a complete drunken a-hole. But your last sentence in this post may indicate why somebody said something to you. It's been my experience that most fans of the Husker football team also tend to support and be fans of the coach, if for no other reason than he happens to be our head coach. If I heard the guy behind me questioning the newly hired head coach of my team, in my stadium, during his very first game no less, I might just say something to that guy behind me also. I'm not really the type to poke a guy in the chest or get aggressive about it but, I sure might say something depending on what it was I was hearing.

You Riley fan boys..... WTF? What narrative is that you think us "fan boys" are trying to make?

Cool good story, brah,. Want to deabte the merits which I asked we would not do? Sure why not?

Want to do personal attacks? Sure why not?

Want to have new members? Nope.

Want to prove my point sure.

This is why sell out streak will end this year.

Thanks for answering question I will +1 this.

I think there is a great range between, "I'm glad Bo was fired and I have faith Mike Riley is the guy." To, "I'm glad Bo's gone, but I'm not sold I'm Mike Riley." Then there are the 5% that back Bo and do something like customize their license to "stil4bo."

It's like a family fight, you may disagree about something strongly, but you're still there for each other and want the same end goal.

1- Fan#1 says things that are offensive to those who hear him.

2- Fan#1 acts all surprised when he is held accountable for his comments by Fan#2.

3- Fan#1 mistakenly thinks this reflects poorly on the fanbase or Fan#2.

Yeah, the more you explain this story, the more I understand why somebody probably told you to STFU or move. Makes complete sense to me. But I sort of made up my mind at the point you said Pelini should not have been fired. That explains a bunch by itself. And, funny enough, now this would tend to support what the writers article was claiming about a divided fan base. Maybe there is more to it than I would of thought.
