Overtime: Iowa Post-game Overreaction

Recommended Posts

Tommy was Tommy and he cost us another game today. The coaches put the players in a position to win and the Defense played well enough to win but Tommy always gets stupid when it is cold and windy. Lets hope P.O.B. can come in and take the job in the spring. We need someone who can play the position and not cost us games anymore. We have suffered long enough with T-Mart and Tommy. Lets play a real quarterback next season.

Aside from curious series' leading up to the failed 4th down attempts, I didn't see as much bad coaching, as I saw Tommy just unable to make good decisions.

I like Tommy, but he's not going to lead us to the 'promised land'. I'd rather write-off next season letting Patrick O'Brien or a transfer come up to speed, than endure another season with TA at the helm. He's just not QB material.

We've got some great playmakers, if we just had someone who could get the ball to them (or even do a better job of not putting it in the opponents hands).

No. Three more practices with this staff could really set us back heading into next year. This is one case where less is more.

We just went head-to-head with the number 3 team in the country. Three weeks ago we beat a top ten team. What the hell do you want?

Us to actually win the games we should statistically win.

BYU: Led the game 28-27 with :03 left. Lost on a Hail Mary.

Miami: Rallied in the 4th quarter to force OT. Throw an INT on the first play of OT, with a bonus unsportsmanlike penalty to essentially give Miami the win.

Illinois: Led 13-7 with :55 left. No timeouts for Illinois and Tommy is given the option to pass, which he so happily complies with, throwing an incomplete pass to an albeit open Devine Ozigbo. Given the sieve the secondary was at that point, Nebraska was bound to give up the big pass play, and they did, and lost 14-13.

Wisconsin: Led 21-20 after Wisconsin missed a FG with 1:30 left. Wisconsin has all 3 timeouts, and Nebraska runs 3 uncreative totally predictable plays up the middle, running a total of :25 off the clock. Given the sieve the secondary was at that point, Nebraska was bound to give up enough plays to put Wisconsin back into field goal range, which they did. Wisconsin hits a FG and wins 23-21

Northwestern: Held the ball for almost 18 more minutes (note: football's a 60 minute game), ran 30 more plays than Northwestern who was playing a true freshman QB and had just gotten beaten senseless by Michigan and Iowa. Lose 30-28.

Purdue: Going up against the worst run defense in the Big Ten with a backup QB, Nebraska throws the ball an astounding, mind-boggling 55 times in a 55-45 loss, which required a 4th quarter rally after being down 42-16.

Iowa: Nebraska ran 39 more plays against the Hawkeyes today and held the ball for 13 more minutes (note: football's a 60 minute game). In a windy day, Nebraska scored just 3 points when going against the win and held Iowa, a team who had excelled on 3rd down ALL SEASON LONG to 0/8 on 3rd down. But no, 4 interceptions from Tommy Armstrong quelled any chance of another Nebraska upset.

Yahtzee, common denominator = TA....

Ummm TA didn't play DB against BYU.

The common denominator is the coaching staff. This program has won more than they had lost with him at QB the previous 2 seasons.

Tommy also didn't play at all against Purdue.

The other day I read a quote from one of the assistant coaches (it may have been Langsdorf) where he said that the coaches routinely felt the need to "outsmart" the opposing coaches in playcalling when they were coaching Oregon State in PAC 12 play.

He insinuated that they were having a hard time breaking themselves of those bad habits now that they are coaching in the BIG.

No wonder they cant motivate our quarterback the change his old habits... they cant do it themselves.

Tommy cannot help but hurt us in big situations. I am ready for POB. I HATE being the blame the QB guy, but holy hell Tommy.

Agreed. You sum up my feelings perfectly. I think he was the best option we had this year.

All I know is there was one thing Tommy couldn't do tonight if we wanted- make bad decisions. Goodness gracious, I think that was about as bad of a game as he could have had. I mean a pick 6 on the 2. The kicker is we were never fully out of it despite how crappy of a game it was.

I don't get how just letting POB be the starting QB is the answer next year. Unless he is a special QB, I don't get how he will be able to come in and make a huge difference. He will be physically and mentally immature, and there is a very strong chance he will struggle as a true freshman.

I am not saying TA is the answer, but just don't assume that POB is going to be the man from day 1. I would like to see a Juco QB brought in to give competition to Armstrong, O'Brien and the other QBs. We at least need another QB that can go in when the starter is playing like a dumpster fire.

Tommy also didn't play at all against Purdue.

That's right, a first time starter did.

My reply was directed at the poster who said the common denominator in all of our losses was TA.I'm not a fan of his play at the QB position but pinning the Purdue loss on him is a special kind of stupid. We lost to Purdue because despite facing one of the worst rushing defenses in the country we chose to throw the ball some 50 times with a first time starter. If the Purdue loss isn't a shining example of bad game planning and use of personnel I don't know what is.

I got money on TA starting as a senior

Seriously? It's possible, I suppose, but it looks unlikely.

3 year starter beating out a true frosh. It does sound highly unlikely.

The QB spot is unique and critical to an offense . . . look at the difference a QB change made for Iowa this year! Honestly, there have been some games this season that TA's shortcomings have created losses. One could easily argue that TA alone lost the game with Iowa . . . but, that's football sometimes. We'll see what the fall brings, I guess, but I'm fairly certain TA won't be the starting QB at the end of next season.

I hate this staff. Everytime I see MR get up after these losses and chuckle over all the f*@k-ups , bad play calls, and mismanagement of the game I want to slap the crap out his wrinkly, old ass. He danced around and shuffled his papers tonight at the podium like he was doing the "gotta potty" dance. So sick of seeing him wandering up and down the sideline like a dementia patient, did he need the notes for the press conference because he doesn't pay attention to the damn game? I know people didn't want the "raving lunatic" coach but di we have to go full blown pu$$y? Did we...really?

Langsderp... 4th &1 fade pass?...Why is he even on the sideline? Is he holding TA's coat? I never see him "coaching 'em up" after all the colossal brain farts. If he had no intention to work on TA then act like you got a pair and BENCH HIM. On the other hand, the QB guru still can't teach him not to throw from a pigeon toed stance after a year of practices so what does that say for his "coaching abilities. I hope the lawn service guy is banging his wife.

Read?... pretty evident he's conned Riley into believing he's really a coach.

Banker's defense is awesome...at least when he's facing OC's dumb enough to bang their head against his obvious schemes. Thank you sweet baby Jesus for not making us have to play OSU, Michigan, or any Big 12 team.

I don't know where folks are seeing "improvement". Record? Penalties? Turnovers? No, no, no. The patient is brain-dead, time to start farming out the organs. Bowl game?!?!? Can you really think of a team out there you'd feel good about playing? No thanks, I've had my fill for a year.
