What Did We Learn: Iowa Edition

Recommended Posts

Other than using our 240lb IB on outside zone plays, never giving Janovich a carry, calling deep passes into the stiff wind, failing to use tempo on Iowa in the 4th quarter....

We moved the ball all game long except when Tommy got stupid and gave it back to Iowa. Just because Langsdorf did not do it the way to please you and others did not stop the offense from being productive.
First rule of leadership, everything is your fault.

Langsdorf didn't call a game to his QB's strengths and we lost. His QB's threw 13 picks in the last 4 games. It's as much on the QB gurus getting paid millions as it is the players.

The goal of the offense is to score points. NU did rack up a bunch of yards, but it failed to make those yards matter with points. It wasn't like Tommy threw 4 INTs inside the Iowa 10 yard line. There was only one of those and that was on a chuck and prayer when Langsdorf allowed Tommy to do something stupid. If you have a QB who is prone to make mistakes, don't call plays where a big mistake can be made.

He is our starting quarterback. You need to understand that.

Langsdorf says he didn't call a run because one got stuffed, but he has no problem calling up pass play after pass play when Armstrong is having a horrible passing day in sh*tty weather...does that make sense to you?...because that's what I need to understand, because it makes no frickin' sense to me at all. Especially since Imani bulled his way through the heart of the Iowa line for two TDs previously.

What is the difference between Langsahan and James Bond?

James Bond doesn't take "no" for an answer

Get real guys, Langsdorf called a great game.

You get real. A great game ends up in the column marked "W". This one did not, in case you haven't heard by now.

Langsford picked out the one guy who could literally give the game away singlehandedly and made him the centerpiece of "the great game he called", and flushed away a pretty decent effort by the rest of the team.

He is our starting quarterback. You need to understand that.

Our coaches need to understand that he should not be our starting QB, or that a different type of game must be called if he is our starting QB.

The first 3 TA interceptions were on 1st down, 2nd down, and 2nd down plays. I understand wanting to be balanced, but if you have a QB who is prone to mistakes, wouldn't you call plays that would limit his opportunity to make said mistakes? It's not like NU was down by a huge margin, or they had long yardages to gain on these plays either. Sometimes, playing conservative is the smart thing to do. Langsahan doesn't want to do that though and he's gonna throw it around all over the place on a cold and windy day.

It is only productive if you win...

So you would not have him throw all the passes that were caught?? The ones that beat Michigan St and Rutgers? Shakes head and walks away.........

For a play caller, you have often more control over passing plays. Adjustments in the running game are made more on a play by play basis. Calling an effective running game requires more sequential understanding, more micro-adjustments with regards to blocking schemes. It's really a bit of a lost art, IMO.

Passing plays can be made to suit all purposes through the use of option routes and packaging plays together. Say you had a 2x2 set, one side can be running a zone concept, the other a man concept. Pre-snap dictates what 'play' you run. A lot of college offenses are primarily third or half field reads like this.

You can package running plays with passing plays, and I've seen signs we're doing some of that. The simplest example is using a twins set and optioning the slot defender. If he wants to leverage outside, you may have numbers in the box. If he leverages inside, you may have a wr screen. A lot of modern football has become reading that defender, whether it's a safety, nickel corner, outside linebacker.

As to our OC, it just seems when he's in a bind he prefers to go to the passing route where he can combine concepts to give more possibilities. Is it a lack of confidence in himself, the QB, the offensive line....whatever, I don't know. That's his comfort zone. Every OC has one.

Get real guys, Langsdorf called a great game. We out yarded them by about 150 yards, held a big time of possession advantage, they did not convert a 3rd down. All the coaches did a great job of putting the players in position to win. We just needed to replace one guy and we win by 21 or more. The future has never been brighter in the last 15 years.

NU never led at one point in that game. For 26 of the 30 minutes of the 2nd half, Iowa led by 11 points. NU was not threatening to win that game. Did the cold weather make it look like you were watching a different game?

All due to mistakes by one player and the tossing of Gerry. The playcalling was pretty damn good all game long.

You go boy! Way to throw the players under the bus. God know the coaches weren't seeing the same thing and calling mostly passing plays... Definitely only one player that cost is the game. PASS PLAYS FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Pass plays beat Michigan St, brought us back against Miami, kept us in the game against Iowa. So we should ignor the strength of the team (our recievers) ranked as the best in the B10 and run the ball with our backs?????????? Really! I have no words for that.
