PJ Fleck

Looks to be just above .500 to me. Time will tell. The MAC isn't the B1G.

It is like the same % as Riley...

He also had a sweet 1-11 record

What the numbers don't tell you is he inherited a complete mess. Recruited a bunch of kids and played a ton of them in that 1-11 season as freshmen. Look where they ended up as seniors. The 13-1 season is not a fluke. He built the team his way, in his vision, and created a culture the kids believed in and the community believes in. Trust me, I've lived in Kalamazoo for 25 years, and I am a WMU alum. He has done amazing things with the program in a very short time.
The community loves him there, don't they?
They really do, he really embraced the community and got them totally involved in his culture. It has been a really cool thing to watch evolve.

Riley at OSU was very similar to Snyder at Kansas State. Programs with horrible histories that each built up and coached through their best stretches ever.
Except that Dennis Erickson led Oregon State to their 2 best years when Riley was coaching in the NFL.

Look at their history as a whole and Riley was responsible for a majority of the better seasons

Riley went 3-8 and 5-6 in '97 and '98 in his 2 years at Oregon State before getting the Chargers job. Erickson then had 3 winning seasons in 4 years, including a 11-1 season in 2000. Riley came back to Oregon State after Erickson left for the NFL, and did a good job of maintaining the winning at Oregon State, but still never reached the heights Erickson did. Riley was 1-2 years away from being fired at Oregon State if NU hadn't hired him The comparison to Bill Snyder is laughable.

Listen to an OSU grad. That 5-6 season was the best we had in years. We were excited as hell. Erickson came in and won with Riley's recruits. He also won with very questionable juco players and embarrassed the program. That Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame was embarrassing. I forget the number, but there were double digit personal foul penalties in that game. Riley came back and kept us happy.

Your assertion that Riley was going to get fired is totally bogus. Even if they wanted to fire him, they couldn't buy out his contract. This was well known. Were we ticked with Riley? Absolutely. He had a lot of years on his contract and it felt like he stopped trying. He also wouldn't fire Banker which was a bone of contention with the fan base.

I went to OSU from 1989-1992. We went 4-7, 1-10, 1-10, 1-9. After that, we went 4-7, 4-7, 1-10, and 2-9. Then Riley took over. I'd say comparing Riley to Snyder is legit.

BTW, Erickson went 5-6 the season after winning the Fiesta Bowl. All was not roses for him.

Exactly, the great Erickson went 5-6 one season after going 11-1 showcasing how difficult it can be to win there. This isn't a one to one comparison of the two coaches. It was grouping two coaches that coached their teams through the best stretches in their respective program histories.

Either way, Miles or Fleck, my OP rings true.

Fleck was the hot name all season long and he got passed over for a lot of jobs before he landed at Minnesota which isn't exactly a great situation. It makes you wonder if maybe there is something about Fleck that made all these other schools pass. I'm not 100% sold that he is as great as you believe.

He refused to interview for them from what was said...who knows though

W/r/t rotating OL, it seems that Nebraska is adhering to the norm. I read up on the topic because it was bothering me, too. There's also no way around the fact that Bo shares the blame yet, to some extent, for personnel...and you don't have to think too hard to recall examples of players he (and his staff) recruited who didn't fit a particular role especially well.

Fleck is the hot hire right now, he may turn out to be a great coach down the road and turn the Gophers into a B1G power. With that being said the coaching world is littered with hot coaches that got the big shot and did nothing with it. You just don't know.

I think he is good hire, but I think Brian Harsen at BSU would be a better hire. More experience and more consistant running a pretty big time program in Boise St.
