McKewon: Huskers can’t let shutout deter them in recruiting

Recommended Posts

Like telling him what they are going to do on offense hands on. I went and looked at Chryst's team stats from when he coached at Pitt. He ran a balanced 50/50 offense that hovered around .500 win percentage. That's not what he's runnering at Wisconsin. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Maybe he runs more due to incompetent QB play and players to run the ball. He still runs the same scheme. Pro forms lots of shifts yadda yadda yadda but they are just running alot out of it

Where Iowa and Wisc tend to beat us are on the O and D lines. They both have had very good O linemen which has negated our decent D lines. We have had a few good O linemen but not all 5 at one time and there has been no depth to plug in when injuries happen. Our O line class last year I hope brings back the parity we need but it may not show up this year. Recruiting on the D line needs to improve....especially at DE if we want to get into the BIG West picture. I think our skill positions will be ok.

This is such a basic concept. But it's absolutely true. +1 We will never get anywhere in the B1G until we can field an offensive line that pushes people around. And a defensive line that breaks things apart. We haven't had either one for several years.

I don't think this is exclusive to the B1G. We will never get anywhere in any conference until we can field an OL that pushes people around. Heck, we'd have probably won a NC in 09' had we had one.

No I'm saying now at Wisconsin the qb's he has are a senior with no prior action and a freshman who took his job basically

Hornibrook completes 59% of his passes and Huston 68%. Both are more than capable but yet they ran the ball 2/3's of the time. Something Chryst never did at Pitt.

People talk about us not having an identity but Riley taught Wisconsins HC most everything he knows? We have an identity and it is similar to most of the teams in the Big 10 frankly. At least in terms of what Riley wants to do. If anything Riley is taking us more towards the Big 10 mold than Bo ever was. PSU and OSU have done different things on offense than what the Big 10 is used to but if you look at the scheme we want to run offensivly anyway it is very similar to Wisconsin, Iowa, MSU, Michigan, ect.

I think people sometimes get caught up in identity being a binary thing - you're either a running or passing team. And, in my opinion, it's not so much whether you run the ball or pass the ball a lot but how your culture, practice and players define your play style.

That's why I don't think Nebraska has an identity and hasn't for some time. One of the biggest issues is coaching turnover and the recruiting/roster issues that result. Another is their ability to teach and develop depth based on play style. Look at Bo Pelini's offenses, for example. While I think we can give him credit for changing offenses to match player strengths, we also saw some pretty drastic adjustments that I personally don't believe are conducive to breeding a successful system.

Riley's opportunity to develop identity hasn't gone very well, in my opinion. We're now in year three and they'll finally have the QB they want, but there's no getting around the fact that they HAVE to improve and develop their play in the trenches. One of the best ways to do that is by having your coaches, QB, WRs, RBs and linemen all on the same page. I don't know if that's been the case these last two seasons.

Maybe because at Pitt he didn't have Wisconsin's O line.

Possible, he did have at least one back with a per carry average over 5 every year he was there.

This. Thank you. Whisky is punishing in the trenches on both sides of the ball. They recruit that. Aside from Wilson, they recruit game managing QB's. Their defense is mean, nasty, plays with an edge and attacks. They recruiting speedy, bruising backs who can wear guys down and are capable of making holes on their own. LB's.... nothing needs to be said. They are intimidating, hard hitting and fly to the ball.

The staff also has the ability to develop walk-on talent into stars. not starters, but guys who could play on other B1G teams and in the NFL....

A list of current walk-ons at Wisky. Many familiar names....

Eleven players who joined the program as walk-ons are in the two-deep: tight end Troy Fumagalli; tailback Dare Ogunbowale; inside linebackers Jack Cichy and Connelly; left tackle Ryan Ramczyk, who sat out last season after transferring from Division III UW-Stevens Point; fullback Austin Ramesh; Brett Connors, who is the No. 2 center and swing tackle; long-snapper Connor Udelhoven; Neuville, the No. 2 long-snapper; kickoff specialist P.J Rosowski; and Andrew Endicott, the No. 2 kicker for field goals and kickoffs.

Consider that of the 28 UW players currently in the NFL – 24 on active rosters and four on the practice squad – a whopping 25% came to UW as walk-ons.
They recruit to this system. Fast, physical, hard hitting, sound, not a lot of fancy stuff. Just line up, punch you in the mouth and win.... Sounds like another team I used to know.....
NU has a storied history as well. Approx 7% of our walk-ons entered the league (in history). (2 still playing out of 26 in the NFL today)
Go back to being NU. And win.

It's not like they are recruiting tons of blue chip linemen, it's just that they develop them better than we do.

Maybe Michigan State but not a lot in common with the others. Those teams are all running teams first and foremost.

We would be more of a running team also if we weren't playing with upperclassmen from Bo and without upperclassmen that left the team. We will start to see upperclassmen from MR in 2017 and 2018. Let's see when these guys take over how much we run the ball. I think some of these top receivers that have decided to go elsewhere are doing so because they know we will not go 4 or 5 wide at receiver the entire game.

How many guys transferred because Cav doesn't rotate his line? This isn't all on Bo.
