Those are the types of things that get an AD and head coach fired. Pure speculation on my part, pure speculation. But Riley has a long ways to go before his supporting cast is developing talent to the extent that we're able to compete even just with Wisconsin and Iowa. How long would we have given him to make these changes at 64?

He wouldn't fire any offensive staff until he was able to actually run the offense he wanted to run.

And lastly, your speculation.  Pure speculation is absurd.  You think Hank Bounds fired Shawn Eichorst in the middle of the season because Riley wouldn't fire any offensive coaches at the end of the season?

Devaney has been on the job, a job no one has ever held at the university before, for less than 2 years.  But some people know what the results should be....

In the thread announcing the hiring of the new coach there will be much lamenting that we didn't hire __________ other guy, and we'll be reminded by those naysayers that we didn't hire the right guy each time the new coach loses a game.

 

I was pretty young and not following the Huskers like I do now when Solich was fired so I don't know what the pulse of most fans were.  Callahan was seen as an outsider and bringing a offensive system very new to Nebraska.  Plus his teams were just not very good.  That's why people wanted him fired.  Fans were very patient with Pelini.  Folks didn't really start hollering for his firing until year 5 and even then it was a very vocal minority, especially on this board.  The tipping point for Pelini didn't come until Wisconsin in '14.  That game is when most people were done being patient, including myself.  Riley is a given on why fans are done being patient with him.  A 61 year old career .500 coach bringing along most of his OSU buddies and not producing a .500 level product.

My source guy is pretty high on him.  But he's also been pretty high on the staff as a whole overall.  Has had nothing but good things to say about he and Parella both .

The results are exactly what they should be...An NFL guy with NFL connections jocking up players that are still in college.  If he was in the NFL it would be the opposite...they would be tearing down players as the draft approached.

I would venture to guess he has a hand in evaluating who gets offered and how aggressive the recruitment of a player should be

I think by support staff he was referring to analysts and the recruiting staff that isn't assistant coaches. Basically everyone in the football program who isn't a coach.

I actually think Devaney was a great hire.  I really believe that it was Devaney that finally convinced Riley to fire Banker.  Doesn't make much sense that Riley did it on his own the way it happened.  Devaney probably had a hand in getting rid of Reed to.

 

So basically I think it took Devaney to finally get Riley to do what he should have been doing on his own but couldn't/wouldn't.  I think there's a spot for a position like that, no matter who the coach is.  Just didn't get things to happen fast enough and the changes that were made haven't improved anything.

You are probably right in that Devaney convinced Riley to fire Banker and Reed.
