Memorial Stadium Turf Being Replaced

TA said they considered grass, but it was much more expensive considering maintenance, etc.

Lots of class-action lawsuits against FieldTurf.  For one example ......

Quote

"HOW TAXPAYERS GET FOOLED ON THE COST OF AN ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELD"

"Taxpayers have been getting hoodwinked by bogus analysis into thinking artificial turf fields are cheaper than natural grass."

"But the reality is that non-partisan studies have shown the exact opposite--natural grass fields are a bargain compared to artificial turf due to the huge costs taxpayers get stuck with to maintain and replace artificial fields after their warrantees expire."

Not mention, player lawsuits (toxic materials)

as far as grass goes cold climate has less to do with it than use and rain.  I'll use soldier field as an example (or most HS fields in NWI).  Soldier field grass is usually beat to s#!t because the Bears aren't the only ones who play there, as they have soccer games and other events there during the season.  Grass is usually fine until you have heavy rain and then have to play on it.  Then it gets chewed up.  If that happens later in the season it sucks because then it gets cold and the ground freezes in that chewed up state making it not fun to play on.  It seems Nebraska likes to do a lot of stuff in the stadium to show off for recruits.  If its one of your selling points I see why they do it..  Kind of have to watch your usage if its natural grass.

The athletic department knows what the costs are - they've been doing this for decades. There is no 'after their warranties expire' involved in this. FieldTurf has an 8 year warranty. Why do you think we're replacing it about that often?

First freaking result when you Google 'FieldTurf warranty': "The industry standard is to provide an eight (8) year warranty on all synthetic turf materials."

Pretty much this.

If you install drainage and heating under the field you can easily grow/maintain grass good enough to play football on in Lincoln NE during October and November (there is an MLS team in Minnesota that has a natural grass field that is used in March and November).  But the problem is usage.  If you just plan to use it 8 times a fall it would be fine.  But if you want to practice on it 3-4 times a week, let the band practice on it 3-4 times a week, host high school football on it, then it becomes problematic in the Lincoln climate.

If everything was equal, I think everyone would prefer grass over turf.  But everything isn't equal.
