It's because they have very little integrity. They claim nine national championships prior to 1936. 1936 was a magical year because that was the first year of the Associated Press Poll. Prior to this, any publication, body, sportswriter, pundit or Wizard of Oz could bestow a national championship on a team. Most of those championships come with a bit of controversy, since multiple bodies handed out multiple championships to multiple teams, often with very little reason or consideration for... much of anything.

That's why Nebraska doesn't claim the "national championships" they won from 1980-1984. Why? Integrity.

I agree entirely. Them claiming they have 2 is a stretch, let alone 11!

I do wonder though, did anyone proclaim us as "national championships" back from the late 1800 and early 1900s? I never thought we did, but I really don't pay much attention to the history of what was quote on quote called "football" for that time.

The first time anyone proclaimed us "national champions" was in 1970, and again in 1971, both widely regarded as "legitimate" national championships.

Nebraska has been awarded "national championships" by various sources, both reputable and not-so-reputable, eleven times: 1970, 1971, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1993, 1994, 1995 & 1997. Of course, we only lay claim to those championships given by reputable sources (those in bold), so we only display five trophies. Frankly, I don't even know who awarded us "championships" in the 1980s, and I doubt seriously we have any hardware for those alleged titles. I know for a fact that no such "championship" trophies are on display at Stadium Drive, but I couldn't tell you if we do or don't have trophies for these up in the coaches' offices.

I think the rule is, if you were Alabama or Michigan and went undefeated or only lost one back then that equates to a national title. Or it could just be if some random late 19th or early 20th century writer said something nice about you. It's hard to figure out.

not quite.

There was a Michigan botter that was running around 3000 votes an hour pretty steadily into the poll last night.

TIME	TOTALV	UofM%	NU%	UofM esT NU estT Total Increase	UofM In NU In
6pm	124990	51	49	63744.9 61245.1 NA	NA

8pm	133153	53	47	70571.09	62581.91	3989	3405.81	583.19
9pm	137138	54	46	74054.52	63083.48	3985	3483.43	501.57

11pm	145463	56	44	81459.28	64003.72	4463	3909.28	553.72

at that point there was a 10% Michigan lead in the poll. What happened since then only Michigan bot coders know.
