Projecting the Depth Chart

Recommended Posts

I know it earlier folks, but considering how much youth we have coming in next year on D, I thought it would be fun to project the depth chart. I'm most interested in what people think the lineup for DT and LB will look like.

I'll start first (I understand this is more than 11 players, but I thought we should account for various formations)

I agree with most of that. What ever happened to Brion Carnes at QB. I think this offseason once the staff has a chance to evaluate ARod film throughout the season I don't see him at a starter even at guard. I think we will pick up another receiver, a DT, and maybe a DE that will be added to the depth chart. Some people are really worried about the D next year but we got a ton of talent coming in.

Wouldn't be a surprise. He is one of the best athletes on the team.

I'll give it a shot, but honestly who knows? At TE, hopefully we get JUCO Brandon Vandernburg, that would help, but I wouldn't mind seeing Max Pirman move to TE, I liked him better as a TE coming out of HS. For me, defense is a complete crapshoot, especially on the D-Line and in the Secondary. A lot of talent, but not enough experience or depth at some positions. 2013 will definitely be interesting....And I'm excited for it!

Offense

QB - 1. Taylor Martinez, 2. Tommy Armstrong 3. Ron Kellogg III (Would be Johnny Stanton, but he is RS)

Sipple said today that he has heard from frequent practice observers that Jonathan Rose will likely be the team's best cornerback next year.

That means in our base defense, our starting CB's will likely be Ciante Evans and Jonathan Rose - and if Rose is really that good, that will be a formidable challenge for any team in the Big Ten. Against teams like UCLA and Northwestern, we'll likely need Green, Mitchell, and/or Jean-Baptiste to step up.

I'm excited about Harvey Jackson and Charles Jackson at the safety spots - if they can learn the defense, I think they might already be stronger tacklers than Stafford and Smith were.

I also saw Cooper on the field in the Capital One Bowl for the first time since non-conference season, I think. Did anybody see where he was? Was he playing in the dime, or were they using him as an outside linebacker? Or safety? Never saw him line up, just saw him around the ball a couple times.

I'm also excited about the starting 5 on OL, which will probably be:

RT: Sirles

RG: Cotton

C: Pensick

LG: Long

LT: Qvale

However, we're really thin and unproven after that. I don't know if they need to change the way they practice, as some observers have said, but they really need to find a way to develop more depth.

The schedule should also help with that - five of our first six games should be absolute blowouts, with the backups playing the whole fourth quarter, if not more. If the starters take care of business against Wyoming, Southern Miss, Illinois, Purdue, and Minnesota, they should be able to get some rest and the backups should be able to get a lot of experience early on in the year before we hit the grind at the end of the year (Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Iowa).
