But I think he should have more to say. He was a quarterback, after all. He should know just how valuable it is for the defense to have an offense that can stay on the field.

Dude. What. The. F.

I've read about a dozen posts from you today talking about the Offense. The Offense has problems. That's understood. But you cannot absolve the Defense from blame by continually pointing the finger at the Offense.

I don't get it. It's like you're looking at the whole team and blaming half. It was an equal meltdown. It's not the Offense's fault that the Defense blew up. Again. It's not the Defense's fault that the Offense stopped scoring or moving the ball after the first quarter.

Why, when people point out that the Defense sucked today, do you constantly point the finger back at the Offense? At what point does the Defense have to stand up and take their own blame?

Alright, let me walk you through my reasoning:

Question #1: What was the difference between the first half and the second half in terms of what the offense was doing and what the defense was doing and how they were doing those things? Specifically, how.

The Defense had problems all over the field.

The Offense had problems all over the field.

Special Teams had problems all over the field.

How, how, HOW do the Offense's problems become the excuse for the Defense's problems? And at what point does that overshadow the Defense's impact on the Offense? And at what point does either of their problems impact the Special Teams' problems? And at what point does that all come back to the Offense as THE PROBLEM?

This is your assertion. I'd like to see you make a case for it. Because from where I sat, the Offense had problems that I would blame the Offense for, the Defense had problems that I would blame the Defense for, and Special Teams had problems that I would blame Special Teams for.

But the floor is yours. Explain how the Offense made the Defense give up 38 unanswered points. Please.

But what did the offense stop doing? They stopped staying on the field. They didn't just not score, they didn't get a first down.

So... the Offense couldn't stay on the field. Why is that an acceptable excuse for the Defense not covering, getting pressure, tackling, or in general playing well?

This is just absurd. The WHOLE TEAM fell apart. One side of the ball is not to blame. Baffling. Seriously baffling.

Tommie has an axe to grind probably because of what happened with Brion here. But he's coming off more and more as just a bitter malcontent. I gotta say I don't think it's very becoming of a former Husker legend to come out and trash the program like this.

He's not calling for anything the majority of the fan base is calling for right now. Anyone defending the defensive coaching right now needs to have their head examined.

Its not one game. It is a body of work, examined over a period of 6 years that continues to have the same issues. Penalties, fumbles, tackling, lack of discipline, horrific O (depends on game), horrific D (again depends on game), blow outs on national tv, most points given up in a quarter at home, 4 of the 10 worst defensive performances, completely inexperienced OC/DC etc, etc, etc........ No way to truly explain away any of these deficiencies.

The time for results is at hand. To date, looking at the past years, would you say we are improving, staying the same or moving backwards? For me, it has been a continual regression since 2009. I am really unsure now with even SUH, Prince, Haag etc we would see any difference in Bo's inability to make in game adjustments......

well, Bo told us preseason he wouldn't trade any of his coaches....he was thrilled with them...package deal I guess....new guy won't have to worry about retaining any of his losers...easy swap...

The problem is more of an overall strategic issue so im not sure id pin it on the position coaches. Defensively, you have to change what you are doing when your base d stops working. It worked for most of the first half. I felt like the coaches got even more conservative when the momentum changed and ucla started scoring. That is just bad strategy, not the fault of the offense for not keeping up. Speilman is a dipsh*t but he wasright, you have to try and bring some pressure at times to disrupt what theyre doing. That adjustment was never made. Offensively, they were giving us the 3 or 4 yard run up the middle all game long. That long drivewas a perfect example of what our strategy should have been all game long. Unfortunately beck felt the need to get the proverbial big play once momentum changed and the playcalling played tight into their hands. Bo is going to have to learn to be a better in game strategizer or it is going to be the end of him.

Zoogies,

You are one of the most level headed posters on here.

But Tommy has earned the right to comment on this team, more so than anyone on this board. His voice will be heard, and things need to change.

Thanks skersfan.

I think he's earned the right, but he's going a little after it. No holds barred is one thing, but the way he's doing this is also not very respectful. When you're in the position he is in and you say something like this, it draws attention. I think there's an argument to be made for if you truly love this program, say your piece, but in a respectful way and largely stand back and don't cause more fires for the staff to deal with. If you have complaints, make them in private, to the A.D.

I mean, didn't Tommie just get honored at halftime in today's game? To turn around and let his emotions get the better of him after that, doing a public disservice to the staff along the way, not real classy.

THIS!

My wife said she thinks Pap doesnt deserve the blame, Beck does.... I said, yes a good chunk is on Beck becasue you cant keep sending your DEF on the field that fast, but at the end of the day, being on the field, you need to make adjustments. It makes me sick that we gave up 3 points through 25 minutes.... and the final 35 minutes=38 points.

I don't know. Don't you think that maybe, just maybe the offense not staying on the field for more than 3 plays and 45 seconds at a time might have just tired the defense out a little bit? That maybe, just maybe having UCLA start every one of their drives in the second half at around midfield combined with the defense being back on the field after just 45 seconds might have made it easier for the Bruins's offense to score 38 points?

Here's what I saw from the first half.

The offense sustained drives (more than they did in the second half), even if they didn't end in points. It allowed the defense to catch a breather and work through any possible adjustments. The defense played really well as a result. Because they played well, the offense wasn't forced to do things it wasn't comfortable in doing.

It's a cycle. When the cycle goes wrong, you have to look where it went wrong, and I think it was on the offense. Not to say the defense wasn't at any fault, because their failings put the offense in a bad position.

I really do not know what needs to be done, but have been screaming for a real OC and DC since both hirings. I think Bo can get it done, but he has to take the Dabo path. Had he done that, I think we would be in much better shape. I think there is still time to do that. But stubbornness is one of Bo's strong suits. And that of never taking the blame. The first half showed we have some talent. It needs to be put in place by qualified Coordinators, let Bo manage the team as a head coach is supposed to do. Spend the money, bring in talent and reap the rewards. It has worked for Dabo, Saban does it. Why can't we.

This^ We are NU and like Tommie, we deserve a better product. This is not some FCS school where guys can learn on the fly. It is one of the winningest programs of all time. 5 NC's, 3 Heisman winners etc..... Dabo spent big bucks and to date, it is paying off. Same with Bama. Bo is in rare company with the whole 9 wins per year. Imagine if we had competent staff to support him?

<img class="UMSRatingIcon" id="ums_img_tooltip" />

In all sports, no one deserves anything more than anyone else. I get tired of people saying we deserve more than what we are getting.

This being said, I appreciate what Tommie had to say. I am tired of status Quo. I dont put all blame on Bo.. but at the end of the day, he hires the OC/DC so blame falls to him.

Something needs to change or we are going to keep losing like we did today. We were up 21-3 and lost 41-21... THAT IS A PROBLEM.

I dont think Bo will like being told to fire his OC/DC and bringing in vets.. so then you fire him. Somehow get Scott Frost in here as our OC and bring in Bohl as our Head coach and a monty Kiffin type Def. coord.

going into this game we all knew slow, clock eating play by our offense was going to be needed...didn't happen.

I think people are reading into his comments what they want to and a lot of preconceived notions about Tommie are influencing the reaction to his tweet. I see nothing bitter or malicious about his comment. He just stated what most are feeling. People can be upset about Tommie as a person but as a player...he's a legend and if TO gets the benefit of the doubt about issues like Lawrence Phillips and character decisions, Tommie deserves the benefit of the doubt with football observations.
