Talent loss if Bo is gone

Recommended Posts

Bo wont lose his job, the offense has been killed by injurys this year

Still not a valid excuse with this schedule as it falls on him to have adequate depth too.

Yes. Every team in the country is expected to have the 3rd string perform as good as the first. Good point.

Just beat Penn State with our 3rd string QB.......

Exactly.....but we stuck with Osborne. I'm just glad I'm not making the decision. lol

You are aware that Osborne finished in the Top 10 in one or another poll in each of his first sixteen seasons, right?

Back then there were only 30 or so teams though so its a padded stat. I may be off by a couple teams teehee..

Thank thesker........ Folks don't remember that. Game had passed Osborne by.....option is to predictable......but the powers that be stayed with Osborne. For example, we used to have one game a year basically. OU. go to bowl game and get beat by the Florida schools.

1989 orange bowl.....lost to Miami

1990 fiesta bowl.....lost to FSU

1991 citrus.....lost to Georgia tech

1992 orange......lost to Miami.

Dates could be screwed up going on memory. But we had a reputation for not being able to win the bowl games. 9-10 .win seasons and folks still were wanting him out. So what gives???

Maybe we stay the course one or two more years.

If we did not have the 5 fumble performance by the Freshman, we are 9-2. Is that good enough for you? If our defense would have emerged just a little sooner at Minnesota we could be 10-1. So Afhusker, yes, let's throw out the baby with the bath water...

problem is we don't even finish in the top 20 anymore.....not relevant.

Hard to finish in the top 25 when 8 of 14 SEC teams take up the bottom half of the top 25 and 3 more sit above that.

And yet we would have been in the top 25 the last two years if we had simply beaten two of those SEC teams.

Or that unranked 8 - 5 Wisconsin team last year.

Or that unranked Minnesota team this year.

Our record against ranked teams suggest Nebraska has not been treated unfairly in the polls.

As much as folks around here love to blame some entity called "the media" I think pollsters are anxious to have Nebraska back in the picture. We have been one win away from being relevant the past five seasons. That's the hump we have to get over.

I'm not going to place all the blame on the media, obviously this year its because the teams we beat ended up not doing great and the teams we lost to are pretty good but not mind blowing either. We cant control our opponents record but we can control the outcome when we play them. Turnovers and injuries were huge this year. Focus against UCLA and Minnysoda was clearly the issue.

Really the point I was making was even if we finish 10-3 we will be hard pressed to get back into the top 25, strange as that may sound. Our schedule has no respect. We need a good bowl matchup and a win. Make a splash at the end of the year, even a small one, to boost some perception heading into next year. I started thinking the preseason rankings matter less and less but after this year I think they are more important than ever moving towards the playoff.

Lots of ifs. If Penn State's kicker can make an extra point..... If Wyoming made a few more plays or had a few more minutes.....If we still had Ohio State and Wisconsin on the schedule,...

Where do people come up with this crap? Go back and look at our schedules. In 1980, we played a ranked FSU and a ranked Penn State team before we started conference play. Same thing in 1981. In 1982 we played a ranked Penn State team and a ranked Auburn team before our conference play started.

Florida State several more times, UCLA several times, ranked ASU teams, etc. There was more to our season than just OU and people need to start realizing it. OU was just the team that we had a heckuva time getting past.

The bottom line is we played 2 ranked opponents prior to conference play 5 times in the 80s and played at least 1 ranked non-conference game 4 of the other 5 years. We averaged about 4 ranked teams per year played. Not any different than what Bo faces now.

The reason we couldn't win bowl games is because we were playing top 5 teams every year because we won most of the matchups vs. ranked opponents during the season.

And again, even with Osborne's accomplishments, there were still those who wanted him gone. That's part of the reason why my concern about Pelini is low. There's always going to be a certain number who want any coach gone. And for those who throw the term "progress" out as a reason for wanting to change coaches, how is it possible Osborne's program progressed every year since he was coach for 25 years? It could be said Osborne regressed immediately since we were winning national championships when he took over.......yet we didn't win the next one until 1994. There were years during Osborne's tenure when we obviously regressed. And yes, I agree we were consistent in the rankings under Osborne. We should have been......he took over a back to back national championship program. Can't say that for Pelini, can we?
