I'm in the minority...?

We adjusted so well we lost. Also, we actually pay a special teams coach and they left 6 points off the board for us to think about. I am looking really hard for that light at the end of the tunnel.. Hope I see it soon.

How does paying a special teams coach make Drew Brown a better kicker in an off season? I keep seeing this on this board, I don't get it.

I don't know. . . maybe coaching him to be able to be a better kicker.

Oh. Coach the kicker to be a better kicker. Well, I will see if I can pass that along to him. Hey, maybe we can coach all the positions to be better? Now we are on to something. I'm sure nobody has thought if this yet. Wait til' we see the look on their faces when I inform them. "hey coach!, all you gotta do is coach him to be better at doing what he does!". Man, this should be eye opening.

Does he get paid to something else? Am I missing something here?

What you're missing is you have to have the tools in place and sometimes no amount of coaching is going to fix that. In the return game, you can set up good blocks. That's something a special teams coach can work on. But you can't make the returner dynamic. That's why it's hard to replace a guy like DPE. In the field goal kicking game, you can help make sure the linemen hold their ground so they're not pushed back and the ball gets kicked into their heads. But the kicker needs to be accurate. Imo the hardest thing to coach for a field goal team is the field goal kicker being accurate. A big part of that position involves the psychological make up of the player.

This brings up the question, on the 1st field goal was Foltz the holder?

No!

I am sure DomiNUs knows they have been thinking about it. He's probably wondering if they had any plans of acting on it after all the thinking was done, or if Bondi could be induced to coming back.

I've seen worse openers. That game 2 years ago when we held on to beat Wyoming after giving up 600+ yards was a much worse performance than this. Just happened to be against a weaker opponent.

Little worried about our talent at a few spots and our health.

We had some bad plus in that game, but Wyoming came to play and they played the game of their season. Still we won that game.

BYU didn't look all that great today. We had consistent and major problems with the defense. We gave the game away.

I'm just trying to find a way to explain why I am concerned without falling into the Riley sucks trope (I do have hopes he can turn us around).

In my opinion, after the first series we sucked until the 3rd quarter, then it seemed we shook off the cob webs. Drew Brown, I hate to say it, he should never kick another field goal this season, he's just not that good. He's definitely a soccer type kicker as you can tell by the hook(kicks it with the inside of his foot rather than on the shoelaces((former div 1 soccer player here)) and he doesn't seem to be able to direct his natural hook. We made changes at halftime and after coming out a bit sluggish turned the game around on both offense and defense. Then comes the 4th quarter and Langsdorfs piss poor play calling. These coaches just got in less than a year ago and are still learning our strengths and weaknesses, nor did they ever have a friggin train like Cross. I chalk this up to first game and think(hope) they realize what they have in these kids. It's a learning curve but after some pissed offness(not sure if this is a word but it should be) i'm realizing what happened. As for the prevent when BYU only needed a FG, I cant explain that and it's not something I forgive when Banker has been doing this for how many years now? It was plain stupidity on his part and now I understand why OSU fans said we're screwed, the guys a moron. I didn't expect a 12-0 season so I can accept some learning to be happening. Not a Riley supporter, but not a hater yet either, want to give the guy a chance even if he messed up my drinking game. I have some patience and I think they can turn this around, but Banker is on VERY thin ice in my book.

I dont either. drew browns problems are mental and no coach can fix that. Everything else was fine.

That is why I begging for NU to go into 4 down mode on the last drive. You have 2 plays to get 3 yards. Put in Jano and Cross, and hammer those fools. You should be able to get 3 yards in two plays. AT least burn some clock.

Like you said, cleat marks. It should have happened, unfortunately the coaches don't know all the players yer and what they are capable of. They really should know them and should have watched film on them, but apparently either they dont have faith or haven't studied enough.

I don't know. Reading thru some of the 'we suck', we're done', gloom n doom posts, I'm a bit confused. If you expected the 1995 Huskers to come trotting out on the field simply from some coaching changes, I think you were unrealistic in your expectations. I've watched a LOT of husker football since the 80's. The last 10 years have been tougher than others, BUT what I saw today made me feel like we are turning the corner toward a good team again. Think about this, NORMALLY for our FIRST game we'd be playing some lower division squad that we should EASILY crush. I can remember a certain Jackrabbit team that gave us ALL we wanted a while back. BYU is a much higher caliber team as far as 'first opponent' than we're used to. We got down, looked sorta weak heading into the half and then FINALLY had a team that was able TO adjust for 2nd half play. New system, new coaches, MUCH better opponent than normal, hell, I kinda thought we did pretty dang well. Heartbreaker end, but lady-luck is slimey skank full of disease and fake allure. We gotta clean some stuff up, get all our starters in the game and continue to improve but I see some light at the end of the tunnel.

All true but we still lost a game that we should have won.

I thought there was an article during camp on how the coach was trying to get Brown to get his body squared up. It was a specific problem last year when kicking from the right hash since most of his misses came from there? Here it is http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/75765-camping-out-specialists/ post #9. looks like Read addressed this specific problem. I remembered this during the game and noted both misses were from right hash. Needs more work but at least the staff recognized the problem.

I thought we should have gone for it even after losing yards on third down. A FG didn't gain us that much and was far from a given while a first down end the game.

Defense had been playing much better in the second half. BYU had only scored a FG in the Second half up to that point. With Taysom Hill out as well, I think Riley felt more confident in the defense making the stop than he felt the offensive line could pick up a fourth down. Especially after losing yards on a vital third down. Like you said though, I don't know how much was gained either way. I'd have to rewatch it.

I often look at Notre Dame for a decent comparison to us. Blue Blood program that was stuck in mediocrity for 15 years. Brought in the NFL guy that took the program to rock bottom. Now, hired the experienced college head coach to right the ship. Kelly has brought ND back to relevance again, but he won only 8 games his first two seasons I believe. It takes time.

Is Riley on Kelly's level? Who knows, but year 1 is just a building block. The W-L record in year 1 means essentially nothing, at least to me. Year 3 is when real results in W-L record should be scrutinized.

I've been drawing that picture for a while now. Here's another one. Both of our more blue blood fans want a run based attack from the 80s, some say the option. But in fact we both have pass first coaches who scheme a lot of short routes.
