and, in many cases, they do not appear to be demands that would lead to actual, progressive change

Yeah, that's a good point. I mean, from the beginning, you look at their list of demands and go "......"

There seemed to be a lot more anger in there than anything else.

Protest is great, and so is activism, but it can also be terribly misapplied. I can still see the argument that a fresh approach was needed, but it's not entirely convincing that the man should have had to resign from his position. I am by nature a pretty status quo guy, though -- and I agree, better to demand specific, substantive changes instead of a sweeping ouster. Activism has to hold itself accountable when it's not being used in the right way.

I think this is my favorite post in the thread so far. Too often, people slam ALL protest and ALL activism, however, when faced with legitimate oppression, I would argue that it is the responsibility of people to voice their dissent in some kind of manner (protest, vote, boycott (my favorite).

I think these situations get tricky and escalate because how exactly do you take a neutral stance? A lot of times, your stance immediately contributes to a line of thinking or a narrative that you don't want it to, and practically speaking it's impossible not to contribute to one side or the other, even if mentally you want to remain neutral and wait and see.

The Ferguson protests are a good example. Turns out, Darren Wilson was found not to have done anything wrong, but also turns out, the police department was all kinds of f'ed up with oppressive policies and racist cops. The protesting community happened to pick a bad representative sample for their cause, but at the same time, would the ensuing investigations that actually did find a ton of ugly sh#t have ever happened without the activism?

I have no idea how people are supposed to sort through all of this stuff responsibly, with people exploiting situations to further agendas other than the truth, and with all of the misinformation not just coming from social media but from mainstream media as well.

What does anything in the link have to do with socialism?

what does anything in that link have to do with common sense?

Nothing. Why the hell are you asking that and how does it relate to my question?

What does anything from the American Left have to do with common sense?

Again, how does this relate?

For lots of staunch Republicans, every dumb thing that happens is the Left's fault. For lots of staunch democrats, every dumb thing that happens is the Right's fault. People who believe this are morons.

You don't think these protests are being led by leftists?

I'm sure not all of them are, and even if they weren't it wouldn't make your comment any less stupid. Just because some people affiliated with one party do something stupid doesn't mean everything that party does lacks common sense.
