Donald Trump vs. The Pope

Recommended Posts

So, the Pope was asked about a bunch of things while on a trip to Mexico, among them the possibility of a wall at the US/Mexico border. The Pope responded:

ABOARD THE PAPAL AIRLINER — Inserting himself into the Republican presidential race, Pope Francis on Wednesday suggested that Donald J. Trump “is not Christian” because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border.

A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said when a reporter asked him about Mr. Trump on the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.

The pope’s remarks came during a wide-ranging, midair news conference in which he also waded into the question of whether the Roman Catholic Church should grant an exception to its prohibitions on abortion and birth control in regions where the Zika virus is causing a public health emergency, including in much of Catholic-dominated Latin America.

Donald Trump is one of the biggest proponents of a border wall, and as the article mentions, has made it clear that as president he'd build that wall - and make Mexico pay for it.

So The Donald didn't take kindly to The Francis's statement today, and fired back with this:

Donald J. Trump Response to the Pope

If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians.

The Mexican government and its leadership has made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope, because they want to continue to rip off the United States, both on trade and at the border, and they understand I am totally wise to them. The Pope only heard one side of the story - he didn’t see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United States. He doesn’t see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation.

For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith. They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.

This is for real. This is actually happening.

Yea, tell us Donald how you are "totally wise to them' (by the way since when did we support candidates who sound like California valley girls?? :dunno - listen to him - he is that shallow)

I'm still waiting on 'the Donald' to explain how he is going to get Mexico to pay for the wall and how he is going to round up and deport millions (you pick the # ) of illegals. When Donald can intelligently explain this wtout one word zingers which come off as 'policy' then maybe someone might listen to him.

I'm convinced Trump would call his mother a liar if it furthered his ambitions. I'm wt the Pope on this one - Trump's arrogance alone makes me wonder about what kind of 'faith' he holds. Faith in 'The Donald' it appears. We are to believe that by the strength of his personality he will make America great and America a "winner' and relieve us from all of the stupid people who are in DC when he arrives in his brilliance. :worship

To those who support him all I can do is: :bang

So the Donald wants to risk alienating most voting Catholics......?

Bold strategy Cotton, let's see how that works out.

This is exactly why this a$$ should not be elected President. He may very well have some valid points on the issue but he has zero diplomatic tact. That may play well at times, on specific issues, but is this the type of dialog we want to have within the international community? It's one thing to pop off to Ted Cruz on an issue, it's quite another to respond this way with other world leaders.

Trump is an idiot. If the Republicans nominate him, they deserve to lose. Of course, if they don't nominate him, he may run as an independent and really screw over the GOP. So there's that.

As far as the Pope goes, I'm not sure being that judgmental is the most Christian thing to do either.....

I don't necessarily agree with all of what The Donald is spewing but glass houses and all that jazz:

Now I know this is just alleged, but where there's smoke...

This really has nothing specific to do with Pope Francis. As someone who is very far from Catholicism but is still a zealous Christian, Francis is a total stud and a humongous breath of fresh air in the papacy. He's made TONS of progress towards cleaning the church of this exact sort of thing as well, although there's still plenty more room for improvement.

'The Francis' seems like a good voice for the Catholic Church, not that I have much interest in touting the virtues of the Catholic Church.

With respect to The Donald's Wall, there's no earthly way it will ever get built even if he is elected and all of us here can agree that it's utterly ridiculous. I mean, like many things Trump, that's super low-hanging fruit and hardly worthy of a discussion.

The astonishing thing is that this is America, this is 2016, and the Trump has (apparently?!) millions of fervent supporters who would raucously cheer him on behind statements such as those in the OP.

Well, here is how it will get done if he is President. It's just like many of his major construction projects.

He will hire a bunch of smaller contractors to do the work. He will then file bankruptcy on the project which screws the contractors out of what he owes them. He will then stand in front of this project with his big smile on his face talking about how great he is because he built it.
