The Obama Legacy

Recommended Posts

Eeek.... should we mention he's the one that got us into the military industrial complex?

Wrong - we were already there. "There you go again".

You need to learn real history instead of listening to liberal revisionists. Eisenhower warned the USA against the MIC as he was leaving the presidency - 1950s.

In many ways Reagan started the course to reduce its (MIC) influence - it was the 'Peace Dividend' of the GHWB administration that came about because the Soviet empire crashed.

A little history lesson - The MIC originates out of the WW 2 build up under FDR (The USA was not a top rate military power prior to the 1940s), The build up continued under Truman wt the Korean war and the desire to match the Soviet threat of the 1950s. Eisenhower in his 2 terms saw the Soviets gain more and more influence. Our response was to match them and to counter their moves - thus Vietnam under Kennedy. The MIC was significantly built up under LBJ by his expansion in Vietnam. The 1970s saw a 'withdrawal' of its influence due to the disgrace of Vietnam, Watergate, state of our poor economy, and later the malaise of the Carter years who greatly cut our military - dangerously so.

Reagan recognized that MAD (mutually assured destruction) was well, mad,- the only way to end this arms race was to defeat the Soviet ideology by placing great strains on their unworkable communistic economy. Reagan rebuilt our depleted military, he worked wt the Saudi's to get oil prices lower (thus hurting the Soviet's heavy reliance on oil revenues to fund their govt/economy). He knew that the Soviets could not keep up the pace with our military build up and that their system would fall like a deck of cards - which it did along wt the rest of the Soviet umbrella states of eastern Europe. When the Soviet empire crashed, this allowed for the 'peace dividend' of the 1990s. Money could be rechanneled to other programs (social) and military bases were closed. This, in part led to the good economy of the 1990s (along wt other Reagan economic programs) - creating the longest and strongest economic recovery of the past 60+ years - something Billy Clinton wrongfully takes credit for and Obama could only wish would occur under his 'recovery'.

Some books to consider reading to understand the behind the scenes activity of the Reagan administration to bring down the Soviet empire and reduce
the threat of a nuclear war.

AP story. While the elites in 2009 wanted to project Obama as the new 'prince of peace' - ushering in a new era of peace after the Bush wars, they were misguided in their attempt to direct this narrative by awarding the Nobel Peace prize so early in his reign.

The article starts out wt:

Once lauded as a peacemaker, Obama's tenure fraught with war

I agree that Bush's legacy was/is disastrous and Obama's legacy will go down in history much more favorably than Bush both short term and long term. But I think it was a premature to award him the Nobel Prize. I can understand 'the slap at Bush' from one angle - the Nobel committee surely didn't like the "go it alone" war stance of Bush and giving the award to Obama probably did send a message of expectations. However, I don't understand the concept of awarding Obama the Nobel JUST as a slap against Bush - it still has to be earned less the award becomes devalued. Kind of like awarding Minnesota a share of our soon to be West Division trophy because we hate Wisc. It should be earned.

The basis of the article however was on the fact that we are still in many conflicts, even more now than under Bush, and the peaceful world has not materialized as hoped. One could claim, however, that most of those conflicts are the result of Bush going into Iraq, - even the status of forces agreement wt Iraq (that Pence talked about in the debate) that the Obama team may have or may not have been able to negotiate (depending on who's facts you believe) is still ultimately the result of the Bush war.

It was likely the worst Nobel prize in the history of the prize. Like BRB said, and the article hinted at, Obama himself knew the award was wholly undeserved. It definitely should be earned, and Obama didn't (and hasn't).

It also should not be a knock on Obama's legacy that he was awarded an undeserved Nobel Prize.

Agreed - it isn't a knock and he handled it well. It was nice reading that part of the article - something I hadn't heard before.

As I mentioned in another post, once Hillary or Trump get elected, I think we will miss Obama's personality in comparison.

While he can be evaluated for policy issues, I think he has demonstrated a good heart esp as the years went buy and

he got over his early term brashness.

Obama Is Finally Getting The Credit He Deserves As Approval Rating Nears 60%

Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are popular within their own party, but unpopular among the broader electorate. The American people have had nearly eight years of an outstanding presidency. The Obama years have been devoid of political scandals. President Obama has behaved like a president that the country can be proud of. He has been everything that the American people could ask for in a president.

At a time when many Americans are fed up with a Republican Congress that has accomplished and allowed nothing, President Obama has achieved progress.

Obama is set to leave office riding a wave of popularity and appreciation that is both hard earned and well deserved.

Not surprising that it comes from a liberal site. I have to LMAO on how some sources are criticized because they don't pander to the left, but ones like this and Vox who are openly biased and liberal are considered good sources by the surprising majority on here because it fits their agenda.

Just imagine 8 years ago...

President Obama

I've got five kids with three wives, my current wife has posed for adult magazines, and I once intro'd a porno. I'm counting on your vote, White America.

And having evangelicals voting for him.

yes, what a strange mixed up world we find ourselves in. Both candidates or morally corrupt and the only reason Trump gets the evangelical vote is because that vote is tied to the Republican plantation via the abortion/judge issue. When evil men becomes our savior (I could use the same name against Hillary - so Trumpster's don't get mad) we need to evaluate our soul.

Now if Trump was truly repentant or Hillary was truly repentant then that is a different story. We all make mistakes, do 'evil', have sinned against others. However, Trump by his own admission has never asked for forgiveness - not an ounce of humility in him to do so. Hillary while not as brash as Trump's expression of not needing forgiveness, dodges the issues of accountability and makes excuses.

However, she did admit she shouldn't have done the eml server thing and said she learned her lesson. So I give her credit for that.(even if it might be fake sorrow after being caught) Now if she could come clean about the Foundation, the blaming the Libya 'riots' and embassy massacre on a film, then maybe we could start trusting her words.

At risk of hijacking the thread but somewhat related:

I did like the link Landlord supplied in one of his posts - a blog by an evangelical lady who, though pro-life, was going to vote for Hillary because the Dems are 'pro-life' in areas outside of the womb. I thought it was a very thoughtful blog. Now I don't agree wt her final conclusion to vote for Hillary as I think that is a very conflicted position - being pro-life and voting for someone who supports partial birth abortion - the worse kind of abortion (worse if it is just a convenience abortion) . At that point, I would just say, I'm not voting for Trump - he is probably faking his newly found pro-life position and is only giving lip service and he isn't very pro-life compassionate on issues beyond the womb. I'd also say, I'm not voting for Hillary because of her radical abortion stance. I'd find another candidate.

If the Dems could allow other voices in their party - like Pro-life voices - then they could be much more acceptable to me in many areas. Their platform typically addresses the important social concerns that our nation faces but it has been taken over by the far left on so many areas in a way similar to the repub party has been by the right. Others may disagree on the how close either party's platform are to the center, but I see both parties too beholding to the extremes.

The Obama legacy?

As time moves on, his crowning achievement, the ACA (Obamacare) is proving itself to be a real sh#t sandwich. I would have to say it is a pretty serious stain on his legacy when his supposed best amounts to nothing more than a complete clusterf#ck that will have to be significantly changed or repealed to make the system workable. All it did was exacerbate and speed up the fundamental problem. Nice work. Thanks Obama.
