Be totally honest, please

Recommended Posts

For those that are truly scared, why not leave the country?

My parents both left a county at war so they could escape the Nazis, years ago. They came with nothing and did okay. My father at 8. My mom at about 13.

So, those of you that are terrified why are you staying?

Be honest.

If I was truly terrified I would leave.

I'm stuck here for at leas the next three years. I'm just about halfway through my professional program. Otherwise I would at least consider it.

I'm not truly terrified for myself. I'm a white dude, I'll be completely fine. I fear in my heart for those who are already marginalized. I suppose the rural America and the uneducated working class qualify for that descriptor, but those are in Trump's camp. I'm thinking they feel ecstatic and safe. On the other hand, he also has some very hateful people in his camp who probably view his victory as a green-lighting to go ahead and start trashing minorities and "take their country back."

This is what scares me.

I think there's a distinctly patriotic choice available to those who detest and oppose Trump-- find a way to work within your own community to try to better the lives of those you think just got made vulnerable.

Thanks for the thoughtful response

To start over career-wise at my age would be a huge step backward, not just in the sense of money, but career ladder, retirement funds etc. As of right now, we're not at a Hitler stage. If the government begins executing people because of their race, beliefs, skin color, nationality, believe me I'll abandon my career, my home and my family and go elsewhere with nothing.

Honestly I am more scared for our future generations than I am for mine. I'll certainly been impacted, but as a woman I'm already at a disadvantage that I'm used to, and it's minimal compared to the others who feel discrimination at a more dangerous and aggressive manner. I felt as though things were improving, not only with views of women, but of blacks, immigrants, muslims. Now those steps forward will at best be stalled out, and I think likely move backwards. It's not a world I'd want to bring children into.

I think as much as anything my feelings aren't fear as much as they are disappointment. Disappointment that my countrymen can be ok with the tone of this man. And determination; to stick it out, to try and do something, to prove that there are as many people here that are not ok with it. Honestly, I feel as if I am in mourning, and I feel great empathy to those who have already been singled out as different and less than by the man that now will represent our country.

I am and have been privileged to travel around the country, and the world, and those who say we are over reacting have no clue how this election was viewed by those outside the US. It has been a significant political event worldwide, and those that are happy with the outcome are not the ones we should be aligned to. He promises to "make america great again" but the outcome will be that we will be great in our minds alone, and only in 40% of the populations' mind.

Dudeguyy & Zoogs addressed the bulk of my response. We'll have to have words later... ;P

Seriously, what really is BS is this mindset of "Love it or Leave it". What this country NEEDS is for people to have a sense of outrage and for people to act RESPONSIBLY on that outrage. We need people to be "All In" regardless of whether they are Dem's, Repub's, Lib's, Socialists, whatever. If someone loves this country, why would they NOT try to make it better? And yes, I said these same things when Obama was elected, GW, Clintion, etc.

I believe in "see a problem, solve a problem" mindset. How else can we make our part of the world a better place to live? I believe it is every persons responsibility in this Great Country of OURS to leave the USA better than we found it.

I am a white, middle class, hetero male. It is a personal affront to me for any person to be marginalized based on skin color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, education, language, whatever. Since at least High School, I have been outraged at the inequity in our system. I also believe the worst thing that someone can do is ruin another person's potential. That is core to my being. Since 10th grade I have actively worked to address this by volunteering with organizations that help the underprivileged. For many years now I have worked with the CDE & a number of school districts on programs to get under-represented minorities (woman, Hispanics, blacks) into math & technology fields.

Ultimately I feel like I want to be the best person I can be. I cannot do that if everyone around me is mediocre. So, I try to help everyone I can to be the best version of themselves. If DT continues to act on his racist, sexist, and degrading position, that is diametrically opposed to everything I hold dear.

So why would I not leave? As Zoogs said, the fight is here. Anything worth loving is worth fighting for, yes?

I'm not leaving the country but after this most recent election I'm seriously contemplating moving states. There were about 20 items on the Missouri ballot and only 2 things that I voted for (narrowly) won. I simply don't share the same views as my neighbors and it bothers me. This has been coming for a while but this most recent election really galvanized things for me. If housing prices in Colorado weren't so crazy it might be an easier decision.

Essentially what zoogs said, and what dudeguyy said. I think Trump's presidency will affect me personally relatively little (assuming we avoid WWIII-esque catastrophes, of course) because of my opportunities and luxury, but I'd be going against my conscience and my faith and my convictions to leave for my own marginal benefit instead of fighting for the America I believe in.

I love this country.
