Savage Husker
Never attended a Big Red Breakfast but always looked forward to the recap. Blasphemous I know, but a guy on husker*** had a pretty good transcript. Pretty bummed they're scrapping it. Quote Link to comment
teachercd
Really? They are? This actually seems very much the opposite of Riley...Maybe no one on the staff really wanted to do it. Aren't they almost always in Omaha on Friday mornings? Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
Meh....Living hours away from Lincoln and Omaha, these types of events mean nothing to me. Although I did get a little concerned personally when I read the title. 2 Quote Link to comment
Savage Husker
I never attended one myself, I just liked hearing what came out from them. Recruiting recap, coaching philosophy, coaching/recruiting stories. It was also questions from the people and not media insisting that their questions are what the people want to know. NUance
This is a surprise, given that team Riley seems to be quite media savvy. I'll bet they roll out some similar venue before too long to appease boosters and media types. Quote Link to comment
Mavric
You’d have to go back to the end of the Bob Devaney era to find out when the Big Red Breakfast in Omaha started, back in the early 1970s. Ever since, it’s featured weekly in-season Friday visits from one of the Husker football coaches — win, lose or chaos. Started in Johnny’s Café in South Omaha, and attended weekly by Tom Osborne up until 1985, the breakfasts eventually started drawing crowds in the hundreds and bringing in media for some final kernels prior to a game. But in 2015, the Big Red Breakfast likely won't be around. “I would love in many ways to continue it, but it does not seem like it on March 30,” said Gary Sadlemyer, former Husker football commentator and current program director at KFAB, the Omaha radio station that took over the event two years ago to keep the tradition going. With KFAB losing the rights to broadcast Husker events starting this summer, Sadlemyer said the Big Red Breakfast “was going to be a pretty difficult deal to pull off anyway.” It becomes impossible to make it happen given that, in a change of practice, it’s been decided within the NU athletic department that Husker football coaches will not do any speaking engagements during those critical months in the fall. Other longtime Husker clubs that have hosted coaches at events during the season recently heard the news. Bill Harper, who's helped set up Big Red dinners for the Tangier Shriners in Omaha, said it was “very much of a surprise” when he received an email from the athletic department informing him coaches wouldn’t be able to attend during the season. “We’ve had Big Red dinners for probably at least the last 20 years, and they’ve been very successful,” he said, pointing out that each of the five events has usually drawn about 300 people to hear a coach talk. roadrat
It's a bigger deal to stop weekly game films at Holy Ghost after over 30+ years or other events that were fundraisers. Couldn't care less about the big red breakfast since that was hardly designed for the common working folks. Quote Link to comment
Red Five
My reaction is always the same when dealing with issues like this or the cancellation of Football 101/201: Meh Quote Link to comment
Norhusker
I understand why BRB is being canceled, however, the annual recruiting dinner was also canceled in Omaha. That event is "off season" so no excuse can be made from that standpoint. I've been to both events and will miss BRB as well. It seems like Omaha is really getting ignored as of late. Almost everything now is only in Lincoln. Lots of loyal fans and ticket holders here in Omaha. I hope our AD remembers that long term. Apparently he isn't terribly concerned. Quote Link to comment
HuskerCarter
It was my understanding that BRB could happen, but neither Riley nor the assistant coaches would be present, and the coaching staff would not do any 1 on 1 interviews during the season, or something like that. Basically it sounded like, no more after practice interviews, mid week updates from the coaches, no more press conference on Monday, or was it Sunday with the head coach to discuss game (but rather the after game press conference was enough). At least that is how I took it. Quote Link to comment
