Recruited/ing QB at Nebraska

Recommended Posts

Can someone please tell me, since I don't follow recruiting enough, if it matters that Patrick O'Brien only has offers from Colorado, Colorado State, UNLV, Texas Tech and Nebraska?

Is it worth looking at who is offering the kid to get a better gauge at how well he'll translate to the college game? Or, instead of who offers, does it just matter how many offers he has?

Why doesn't POB have more offers on the table from other schools?

I'd go read his thread... Part of reason was late bloomer. Scouts in area have said he isn't the same player he was his junior year. All Cali schools have their QB commits already for 2016, which opened door for Nebraska. He has had an incredible bump in ratings as well since offered by MR. Not because of that, because he has earned it apparently. He plays in a good class in Cali and is leading his team to an undefeated season so far..

Id really recommend you just go through and read his entire thread. Lots of info on this stuff in there.

POB doesn't fit in every teams system. While he will run if necessary he is pretty much a thread the needle/ hit the receiver in stride passer as opposed to a run first/ lob the ball in the general direction and hope the receiver runs under it before the DB does. All of the big boys already have at least one if not two QB's recruited. His soph and Jr years he focused on baseball as much as football and this past summer hired a top QB coach so he could commit fully to being a great QB. His efforts are showing in this his senior year. Riley and Langsdorf found him early and got him onboard.

I think I remember reading that USC had offered him and tried to get him to commit before his visit to Nebraska. Not totally sure about that and I don't think we have any way to really know. If players don't publicize their offers the recruiting services won't show them.

Regardless, he is having a fantastic senior season and has looked great. According to MaxPreps his passing stats are 148/185 for 1998 yards, 21 TDs, and 4 ints. Thats 80% completion percentage, 10.8 yards per attempt, and 142.6 QB rating. And his rushing stats are 64 carries for 478 yards (7.4 yards per carry) and 5 TDs. Those are through 7 games. Those are some pretty crazy stats and are a huge improvement over his junior season. They also indicate a strong work ethic and desire to get better. I can't wait to see what he becomes once Riley and Langsdorf get ahold of him.

OC Varsity named him the mid-season offensive player of the year. He got the nod over the very highly rated Stanford QB commit KJ Costello for that. That article also says he has 8 rushing TDs which is more than MaxPreps. I also saw a video from MaxPreps in which they mention him as a player to watch for their player of the year award.

Like MattyIce said, his recruiting ranking have really risen since his commitment. At least among the services that have bothered to update them. 247 now has him in their top 100.

He hasn't been playing QB all that long and his high school is his actual local school. I think this is only their 8th season. Those two facts contributed to him being under the radar for most of his career.

A lot of reasons for a lot of excitement here!

Oh yeah, that QB coach would Steve Calhoun, the same coach that helped Martinez with his improvement between his sophomore and junior seasons.

USC and UCLA were interested but they ended up getting other commits so they didn't end up offering him.

But it's mostly a late-developing situation where he wasn't as refined early on when he was splitting time between baseball and football. He really came on once he was focused on football.

Have we ever given thought to paying this guy a heck of a lot of money to have him be QB coach at Nebraska?

Maybe he doesn't want to be a college coach. He can stay in California, have people pay him good money to be a QB guru, and not have to worry about the crazy hours of being a college football coach. Maybe he has kids or family that he wants to stay near.

Honestly, if I were him, I would stay right where he is at. He controls his life and where he lives. He makes good money and he doesn't have to answer to emotional/irrational fans who want him fired every time the team doesn't do something perfectly only to have to pack up and move the family all over again.

I think Langsdorf is going a very good job so far this year and hope he stays for a while. I also like the idea of using this guy in the off season if needed. (no, that doesn't automatically mean our QB coach sucks.)

I think it is comforting to see a recruit with offers from all of the big boys and we win out and get him. But, I don't really care who is or is not recruiting a kid as long as we are recruiting good football players that want to become great players at Nebraska. Frankly, very few of the most highly touted recruits in Nebraska history have turned out to be great players for us. In my view, our strong 3 and 4 star guys have outshined our relatively few 5 stars historically. Lawrence Phillips being one fo the most glaring exceptions as he was recognized by many as THE BEST in the country when we got him. Mike Rozier was not so highly regarded. Roger Craig, from Iowa, was not highly recruited and is certainly one our of greatest. Tommy Frazier was not highly recruited as most schools would not want him as their QB. He was our very best QB in the view of many Husker fans and certainly among the top 5 QBs of all time, regardless of stats. Gerry Godowski only had one season of playing time and was one of our top 5 QBs in my opinion and many fans don't even remember him. He was a GREAT athlete. Eric Crouch was not highly recruited and won a hesiman playing QB for Frank Solich and mostly ran the ball as a running back taking snaps. He was a fair thrower at best.

It appears, based on the press reports and his numbers, etc., that Pat Obrien may be the best all around 'pure' QB recruit to Nebraska since perhaps David Humm or Vince Feragamo in the 1970s in my view. T. Gabbia, if we can land him, would be probably the most highly regarded QB ever to come to Lincoln! In my view. Time will tell as we don't know for sure. I have not read anything reliable about Obrien's running ability (speed fpr example ?). We need to see if he is a 4.55 or 4.8 in the 40. That will tell alot more. A slow QB will be 'ify' at best no matter how well he throws. Vince Feragamo played pro ball and QB'd a superbowl but I don't think he could outrun anyone on the field in the 40, if he could actually run 40 yards.
