Ralph Brown says Pelini needs to build better bridge with ex players

Surprised this hasn't been talked about yet.

“A lot of us haven't felt truly welcomed like in the past. Maybe that’s us. Maybe Bo Pelini and staff aren't’ opening it up enough. I don’t know,” Brown told the Gaskins and Stephens Show. “I’m not asking Bo Pelini to invite me to practice; I'm just saying from a general standpoint, it doesn't seem like a real open push for guys on the sidelines.

“There isn’t a huge connection, like a brotherhood that was put in place when I played. Can it be reestablished? Yeah – but that’s up to the head coach, staff, institution, and AD – to get the players involved with the former players to build that connection and help build that bridge back together."

What the heck? Is he confusing Bo Pelini with Bill Callahan? Is this real life?

Brown, on PJ Smith's recent comments on 1620 The Zone:

“Coach Osborne was dialed in - we were all dialed in,” said Brown. “Coach Pelini is a very emotional guy. He’s up one week and then he’s down. His emotions take control of him and it’s like a roller coaster ride. His team takes on a roller coaster ride during the season.

“I want to see a team that doesn't quit, a defense that plays hard for all four quarters, an offense that comes out in the first half strong and finishes strong – I don't’ want to see a tale of two halves. I want to see a team consistent.”

This was telling and alarming IMO. It is one thing for a fan to think/speculate, but another from a guy who played at NU and the NFL, at a very high level. Makes sense though as guys take on the personality of their leader whether in the office, the platoon, playing field etc......

I liked, and always have angry Bo. That passionate fiery guy is who he "seems" to be. Intense. Maybe trying to be calm doesn't wotk for him and it trickles down to the team from the let downs and jeckyll and hyde performances.

I still feel this is the year that is starts to come together. Athletes, players and coaches.

It's an interesting perspective, for sure. Hard to argue with his assessment of the team taking after Bo, and I don't think anyone should have the audacity to say that he's wrong about not feeling welcome. Although he did say that part of it might be on him and other former players - I wonder where the truth lies in this, because we know that is not the case with all former players. Maybe it's Bo's secluded nature being miscommunicated as uninviting when he really wouldn't mind those guys around but doesn't actively extend an invitation to them. Who knows.

In this area Bo is doing probably as much as anybody could ask. The only difference is winning. You can't please everybody. Go 13-1, though, and there's likely a lot less chirping. The other points Ralph made were good, I thought.

It's interesting that the same narrative came around with Callahan. Callahan and ever Pederson (barf?) were probably a lot less sinister than they're often made out to be on this count -- they just didn't succeed.

I'm less and less concerned when former players voice concern about not being welcomed back. Bo's job is to coach this years team. Who knows, maybe Bo feels like the former players don't invite him over for dinner often enough. Maybe all it takes is some good ol fashion communication.
