The last time Nebraska beat a top 10 team

As I've been saying for a long time, this was not a top ten 10.

And heads up to those chickenhawks, they're not one, either.

FOR f#*k'S SAKE!

Reasonable statement IMO. I mean, just because they were 32-3 in the past three years combined (including this one) coming into this game and undefeated this year doesn't mean you deserve to be a top 10 team.
They barely beat Purdue, Rutgers, and needed 3 garbage time TDs to make the Indiana game look good (it's neck and neck for 3 quarters).

Those are all really good teams, right? Of course they are, that's why MSU out gains their opponents per play by so very little. It would just look funny to do so if those teams were say at the bottom of the conference standings. Those other teams listed in the top ten must be the ones playing those sorts of teams, because they're out gaining their opponents by a ton more.

(In all seriousness, don't define what you do by what you think your opponent is. When you go up in the air fighting for a ball against another grown ass man, you made that play. Doesn't matter what you think of the guy. If anything the past two weeks has taught us, it should be this.)

Honestly man, you can knit pick all you want to fit whatever agenda you have but the truth of the matter is that Michigan St is widely acknowledged and respected as a near elite program the past few years. There style of play doesn't always result in blow outs going with the great defense, great run game and smart QB play. Mind you they just lost one of the great defensive minds in the game in Narduzzi and were still undefeated until tonight. They've consistently competed and beat the best in bowl games. Anyway you cut it, this was a great win against a very respected program and should be used as a great foundation to build upon moving forward.

Does this flip the script on Riley and Co just like that? No. But quit discrediting this win as if it was against a team who came out of nowhere and doesn't deserve to be ranked where they were as you're just disrespecting both this win and the Michigan st program

I'm guessing this is your first year watching college football. Maybe you should watch some video tape of last year where everyone thought Florida State should be in the top 4 when they were undefeated, and they weren't wrong. Even though FSU had several come from behind wins. Being able to close out games is important, as any Husker fan should know considering how this season has gone. MSU had that... until they played us.

All that matters is a win. That's really all that matters. If you score more points than the other team, that's all people care about. I could care less if it was close, they were undefeated.

A W is a W, and dangit we got a huge one tonight for the players, the coaches, and the fans. The N was well represented by everyone supporting our Huskers tonight in that stadium. Electric to the point it made me emotional, I hugged 34 people I didn't know. Absolute craziness in that stadium and regardless of how we finish, how we are next year, whatever, that was awesome and to do so against a team of their caliber....Freakin Awesome! GBR! Give Rutgers hell on Saturday and I will be loud and proud on the 27th!

Last year tOSU lost to a VT team that ended up 7-6, had an OT win over a 7-6 Penn State, and beat an 8-5 Minny team by only 7 points. You want to go to one of their message boards and explain to them how they weren't really the best team in the nation last year?

my goodness how excited i'll be if Nebraska can beat Rutgers next week... Sets up a showdown vs Iowa. Really can get a rivalry game feeling.

After the win over MSU tonight Iowa has to be looking at us a lot more seriously. I'm not suggesting they fear us again....not yet.

It isn't up to us to determine if MSU is or not a Top 10 team. According to the people responsible for determining where teams rank, MSU was #7. It is a top 10 win according to the definition most people use.

Agreed. MSU could still end up in the CCG. They are a quality opponent by any measure. And tonight, they LOST! biggrin1.gif

It's going to be hard for them to get excited to play a 5-6 (or a 4-7 - hopefully not) Nebraska team one week before playing in the Big Ten Championship Game.

The last time we were unranked and beat a top ten team....

1977

Osborne had an unranked team in 1977?

It was pretty rare for his teams to be unranked.

We opened the season ranked 15th, lost the opener to Washington St, and dropped out of the top 20. With the top 25, I am sure we would have been ranked. In week 2 we beat 4th ranked Alabama 31-24 and finished the season ranked 10th.

So this begs the question, when was the last time an unranked Nebraska beat a top ten team TWICE in one season?

Although it is probably bad luck to speculate right now. Beat Rutgers first.
